PoliticoAs de Blasio touted his liberal record in Iowa and South Carolina in recent weeks, nearly three dozen former and current aides, consultants and allies who spoke to POLITICO panned the idea or doubted that the mayor would end up going through with a run for the Democratic nomination. Aside from the few people working on the nascent effort, only two said de Blasio should run.
Their reasoning: Some say the 2020 field, a dozen-strong and growing, leaves no room for de Blasio, whos long struggled to fashion a national persona comparable to past leaders of the countrys largest city, like Rudy Giuliani or Mike Bloomberg. Many note that he has too many glaring, unresolved problems at home. Others say the never-truly-popular de Blasio, whom a top Hillary Clinton backer once called insufferable, lacks charisma.
A few skeptics in de Blasios orbit have gone public. "I believe Bill de Blasio has 100 percent the right message; Im just not so sure he's the right messenger," the mayors former campaign and City Hall advisor, Rebecca Katz, said recently on a local politics podcast.
The theory behind a De Blasio candidacy would likely be his performance as Mayor of NYC. I'm not sure a lot of NYers would give that a ringing endorsement.

(17,608 posts)(for running for Prez, at least if that is their real purpose)
But don't candidates get to tap campaign funds for certain purposes long after they end their campaigns? Not sure where I heard that, but it would explain a lot.

(94,757 posts)The funds can be expended in support of other political activities (Federal or State, depending on the account). That can include travel, meals and hotels, but must be linked to political activity. You can't take the money home with you.

(17,608 posts)So let's say I start a prez campaign and get a couple thousand idiots to donate to me. Now I suspend my campaign. Can I then run for, say some local office, and just charge all my meals and travel around my locality while I run for that office (which I also have no hope of winning, because people know me )

(94,757 posts)There are separate Federal and non-Federal accounts. The Federal money could be re-applied to another Federal race (say, President to Senator) or transferred (within limits) to another Federal candidate. The non-Federal money (depending on the State) could be shifted from Governor to, say, Attorney General.
