Bernie Sanders decries planned closing of Philadelphia hospital

By HOLLY OTTERBEIN 07/07/2019 09:17 AM EDT

Sen. Bernie Sanders on Sunday assailed the planned closure of a hospital in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, saying it demonstrated the failures of the country's greedy health care system.

Company president Joel Freedman said he "relentlessly pursued numerous strategic options" to keep the Philadelphia-based Hahnemann University Hospital open, but it "cannot continue to lose millions of dollars each month and remain in business."

The Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals accused Freedman of having "basically plundered" the hospital, which dates back to 1848, "and driven it into the ground," according to a report.

"The business model of America’s current health care system is not about healing people or providing access to medical care — it is about making as much money as possible for insurance companies, drug companies and wealthy investors," said the Democratic presidential candidate.

"The situation in Philadelphia illustrates the entire problem: In a city with one of the highest poverty rates in the country, a major hospital serving low-income communities is on the verge of laying off 2,500 people, abandoning 500 medical residents, and closing its operations thanks to an investment firm looking to make as much money as possible in a corporate fire sale."

How would Hahnemann have stayed open on that basis?

system. You do know that the private for profit health insurance system also negotiates hospital rates down as low as they can, right?

Under MFA the hospitals will get reimbursed at the same rate for every patient that gets served. No collections costs, no unpaid bills, no complicated multi vendor billing systems.

But for profit health services will continue to be vulnerable to market forces seeking ever higher profits.

He's accused of viewing it as nothing but a real estate investment, valuing property value over patients. And according to the article at the link, his family "are the beneficiaries of a trust that owns 90 percent of the equity in the Philadelphia venture." And he has the gall to blame doctors for not stepping up to improve documentation and therefore, billing.

Fucking obscene Wall Street vultures.

--Expenses growing faster than revenue.

--Demographic decline creating a shortage of qualified staffers which leads to reduced patient loads and hiring of expensive temp workers.

--Declining local economies with more patients on Medicaid.

--Demographic shifts hitting rural areas, with communities shrinking by large numbers.

Google North Carolina rural hospitals and you'll see the same. We have a healthcare crisis in this country.

could focus on the healthcare crisis we have in this country.
