Iowa, Nevada to launch caucus voting by phone for 2020

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Democrats in the early presidential contest states of Iowa and Nevada will be able to cast their votes over the telephone instead of showing up at their states' traditional neighborhood caucus meetings next February, according to plans unveiled by the state parties.

The tele-caucus systems, the result of a mandate from the Democratic National Committee, are aimed at opening the local-level political gatherings to more people, especially evening shift-workers and people with disabilities, whom critics of the caucuses have long said are blocked from the process.

The changes are expected to boost voter participation across the board, presenting a new opportunity for the Democratic Party's 2020 candidates to drive up support in the crucial early voting states.

"This is a no-excuse option" for participation, said Shelby Wiltz, the Nevada Democrats' caucus director.

And what assurance do we have that the GOP won't jam the phones or - worse - give all Nevada and Iowa's delegates to the least electable Democrat?

Get rid of the fucking caucuses and have nothing but closed primaries in all 50 states. That's the only fair way to do it.

Only been to a few here in Nevada. Not a fan. I think a lot of people here were turned off by the sausage-making process.

6. Correct but does the State Legislature have anything at all to do with the process?

I was under the impression that this had nothing to do with them and that this was something wholly determined by the State Democratic Party.

7. Both primaries and caucuses can be either government-run or party-run.

It looks like Nevada will be sticking to their party-run caucus based upon this December 2018 article in the Nevada Current.

and they were a disaster. When I first heard this was their idea, I just shuddered.
I am in Iowa and maybe the only Iowan who would love to see the caucuses disappear.

However, without the caucuses and the first in the nation status we get with it, no candidate would ever come to Iowa.
