Throughout our history, the Postal Service

Actor Danny Glover: My parents proudly worked for the US Postal Service. Don't destroy it.

When I was growing up in the 1950s and 1960s, my family planned our vacations around big picnics for post office employees. I remember the thrill of taking the train from San Francisco to one of these gatherings in Santa Cruz.

For my parents, both longtime postal employees and union officers, that was their community. Back then, it was mine, too.

Today, the U.S. Postal Service is under pressure to slash costs in ways that would be devastating for customers and employees of all races — but especially African Americans. For black families like mine, the Postal Service has long been one of the few reliable paths to the middle class.

My parents were so proud in 1957 when they had saved enough money to buy a house. They sometimes held union meetings in our living room and had me put my seventh-grade typing skills to good use addressing envelopes for the union newsletter.

for 34 years and for ALL of those years there was threat of privatization. Also, all those years they were pressed to slash costs. By the way, they get no tax payer money from the government. The only money they get is selling postage, shipping packages, sales from the postal store. Thank goodness he retired a couple of years ago because the stress of working there was unbelievable. By the way, most of the people he worked with were MAGA folks which made things even worse the last year he was there.

I retired from 44 years PO service in 2010. I started in 1966. In all my years of PO work, we never talked politics at work. We were very aware of the Hatch Act and were required to sign a legal document indicating we knew and wouldn't violate it. In my Calif town,we had a very diverse group of employees who wouldn't have stood for racist comments being made or political comments made by MAGA supporting employees. As a manager I wouldn't have stood for it either. We didn't treat any customer differently due to race, or language. I don't know where your hubby worked, but in my PO we worked together well and kept politics out of the PO as they should always be.

as does Andrew Yang with this policy proposal.

PROVIDE BASIC BANKING SERVICES THROUGH THE POST OFFICE

There are many communities that are underbanked throughout the U.S. that have to rely upon payday lenders. However, virtually every community has a post office, which are now looking for new sources of revenue and support. We should allow U.S. Postal Offices to provide check cashing, savings accounts, wiring money and other basic financial services.

would become part of the postal service amenities. Of course they would come priced for profit. so the millionaires and billionaires could make money from it and at a price those communities could ill afford.

The USPS has been forced to accumulate. We all know what happens to retirement funds when a for profit group takes over.

On a positive note, I agree the USPS should be allowed to have banking also. I remember buying stamps to put into a booklet. When it was full I had a savings bond. I think it was a $25 dollar bond that I used to help fund my move to a city that offered Vo-Tech for $50 a year. Now we have to buy US savings bonds at a bank.

I also worked for the PO for 44 years and attended some of the picnics Glover was speaking about in Santa Cruz as I live there. Trump is trying to sell the PO, the land and building's it owns and privatize it. He also plans to steal all PO employees trust funds by taking over and destroying the OPM which administers federal employees retirement and pay operations.
Trump is also now attacking PO and other federal retirees earned benefits and plans on cutting what we were promised.
All federal retirees and current employees should be very worried. Immigrants families were promised safe harbor by previous admins if they joined the military and served the US. Trump has broken these promises by deporting family member while others serve our country from each family.
No matter what party you belong to, you will be hurt by trump's attacks on our health, retirement and everything else he's attacking. Trump is working with McConnell to cut SS and Medicare benefits which will hurt everyone.

Think before you vote. Encourage and talk to people and help others to register.
Our country and its peoples can't take 4 more years of trump.

One last thing, trump is trying to destroy our worlds postal union by attacking all the agreements with other countries regarding rates, and regulations which have stood the test of time for over a hundred years. Agreements with other countries limit what can or can't be sent to them, protecting the US and their country. I guess trump wants total control of our communications with family and friends living in other countries. Perhaps Putin is pushing him on that so he can control his country's residents more than he is now.

many Americans (most?) don't care about seniors. They don't care about preserving Medicare as it is, Social Security, pensions that workers worked decades for, retirement accounts.

Wall Street has been drooling for years, waiting to get its hands on all the funds of any kind that are set aside for seniors.

because that is the future. Paper mail like letters and bills will be a thing of the past after the next decade, everything will be electronic by then with paper mail considered a premium costly option like priority mail is now.

USPS isn't immune to this phenomenon, industries like photo processing, print magazines and newspapers, video rental and music stores, etc have been eliminated or are in severe decline due to technological advances.

Amazon is already rolling out automated small parcel delivery but that will probably only be feasible in the near future in more densely populated areas where drone delivery is efficient.

condo/apartment main entry doors and NDCBU(gangboxes).Utility bills, credit card notices, magazines and other publications would be delivered daily by multiple low wage persons who would have no alliegiance to any particular company. These workers would switch jobs as frequenly as fast food employees.

Over time, access keys would pass through so many hands, accurate accounting for them would be impossible.

And that would only be part of the problem with postal privatization.

mail delivery will run it as a collection of discrete profit centers. Then, those that are profitable will be chopped away. The chopping will kill most rural post offices. The USPS must not be privatized.

Post Office is written into the Constitution. No Executive Order from dump is going to Privatize the United States Postal Service. To privatize requires a Constitutional change, which requires all 50 States to vote on this Constitutional change.

Weird to me how the lowly workers at the Post Office are the first to get axed all the time, but you quite never hear of the higher-ups getting pink slip. I do remember in early Y2K there being talk of RIF (Reduction in Work Force) for Salaried workforce, but don't remember seeing that many job positions going away.

Yes, I was a Postal Employee for 22 years. I worked as a Letter Processing Clerk for a bit over 7 years, and a City Letter Carrier for rest of my Postal Career. Health issues forced me to retire early. And yes, I'm concerned with OPM and Retirement benefits being sacked, all due to greediness of certain politicians.
