Inslee knocks Sanders, 2020 rivals over filibuster support

Politico

Jay Inslee’s presidential campaign is built around an ambitious crusade to stop climate change and cut carbon out of everyday American life. But the Washington governor says his sweeping plans to remake the U.S. economy are more achievable than 2020 rivals’ big ideas, because he accepts that the first step would be abolishing the filibuster in the Senate.

Though the 2020 presidential field is overflowing with ambitious policy proposals, nuking the 60-vote threshold to overcome minority opposition in the Senate has given many Democrats pause — especially among the current and former senators atop the polls. Sen. Elizabeth Warren has expressed support for ending the filibuster, but Sens. Bernie Sanders, Amy Klobuchar, Cory Booker and Michael Bennet have warned against getting rid of it, while Kamala Harris and Kirsten Gillibrand have been cautious on the issue.

But in an interview with POLITICO reporters and editors, Inslee said rivals’ most important policy priorities don’t have “a chance in hell” without filibuster reform.

"My opponents and the other aspirants in the race have really sincere, powerful things they want to get done," Inslee said. "None of which would have a chance in hell of getting done if they continue to cling to this filibuster. There is no way that Mitch McConnell is going to let major climate change legislation to the Senate floor. Even if we have 59 votes. He's not going to let it happen."

The filibuster must be abolished. We don’t have an opposition party that governs in good faith so we gotta do what we gotta do.

Nothing big will ever happen with the filibuster in place. People say that without it you wouldn’t have Obamacare. But first you would have had a far more robust Obamacare with a public option which could have made it untouchable. We need to take that chance if we are going to change the trajectory in this country.

Think what we could have had if Harry Reid had disposed of it in 2009.

And please spare me the whatabout-what-the-pukes-willl-do-when-they-get-back-in! 1) they'll do "it" anyway and 2) if we give the people what they want instead of letting a minority block everything good, they won't GET back in.

it was several senators who refused to go along. Two were Leahy and Feinstein who eventually did go along but they were dead set against in 2009 as were many others.

when properly administered. Mitch blocked Democrats when he held the minority, now he blocks everything when in the majority.

In a free and open society, it is important that significant positions held by a significant minority be vented openly and fairly. Without that we have the Tyranny of the Majority, like we do now.

What prevents us from using it now? Because if you do eliminate the filibuster, that will be used against Democrats. Everything is used against Senate Democrats, minority or majority. Mitch blocked Obama judges, now he won't honor Democratic blue slips that block judges. This has been one-sided, and unfair.

Let's not make the unfairness permanent. Political civility could return someday, if we don't weaponize it into granite.

but the minority doesn't get to dictate policy. Elections are supposed to matter. When we voted for Obama and Democrats we should have gotten the policies we voted for, instead we got GOP policies and then Democrats got punished in the midterms for those policies.

primary today, I would vote for:
