Sanders says Pelosi is being 'a little' too tough on progressives like Ocasio-Cortez

"You’ve got to bring them in," Sanders said of progressive House members pushing for more change, "not alienate them.”

July 14, 2019, 11:33 AM EDT

By Ben Kamisar

WASHINGTON — Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said Sunday that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is being “a little” too tough with her recent criticisms of progressive House freshmen like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.

Asked about growing tensions between the House Democrats, Sanders said that he supports “Alexandria and the other women’s desire to bring more people, especially young people, working class people, into the Democratic Party.” And when asked if Pelosi is being too tough on those freshmen lawmakers, Sanders replied, “I think a little bit.”

“You cannot ignore the young people of this country who are passionate about economic and racial and social and environmental justice. You’ve got to bring them in, not alienate them,” Sanders said in an appearance on "Meet the Press."

There’s long been a tenuous alliance between lawmakers like Ocasio-Cortez and House leadership like Pelosi on both the direction and the strategy of the Democratic Party.

But it’s been a raucous few weeks for the relationship between those sides. Pelosi criticized the group of progressive Democratic lawmakers — Ocasio-Cortez and Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass. — in the New York Times by arguing that “all these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world.”

Which brings up a point - since he has clearly declared himself as a Democrat, why does his Senate website still show him as an Independent?

Before anyone says it's because he was "elected" as an Independent, the House website shows Justin Amash as Independent even though he was elected as a republican.

we're basically fucked. For good.

Anyone who thinks Trump and his right-wing mouth breathers are going to be shamed into better behavior needs a full-body adjustment. These Neo-Nazi, nationalist goons both here and abroad are undermining the basic understructure of all our western democracies. What greater prize than the United States? The public intra-fighting between Nancy Pelosi and AOC serves only one purpose: dissembling the single barrier we have against the thugs, a unified Democratic front in the House. Without that, we have no arsenal at all.

We need to keep our eye on the real threat--Trump, Trumpists and the extreme right-wing elements vying to bring the world down. Anything less is national suicide.

building a power base of other reps, many more than four and some preferably not as far left for added credibility, instead of sniping and tweeting at the Speaker and other Dems, they could've went to the Speaker with actual leverage and said we can defeat this immigration bill with our block unless some changes are made.

Time to learn how to operate in Washington, the big leagues. This is no longer the high school-college-20-something twitterverse where you casually toss out insults to others where the world can see and suffer no consequences.

Uh-un, not there anymore. Be adults, stop attacking other Dems on twitter. Try doing what grown-ups do. Walk down the hall to their office and hash it out in-house.

To make sure Trump gets out, older folks usually vote so its the youth we need to get to vote. I just think we don’t want to piss them off.

I understand both sides of what happened and think Nancy should call and talk privately in the future to them. They are the children in this and she with the experience so of course the young ones will make mistakes but we absolutely need their energy in this election.

Things like this if not stopped will keep the young from voting not in primary because they can vote far left but in the general where it really counts.

As a person who has talked to many knocking on doors and calling we need to all work together this time from far left to as far right as our party goes!!

Jahana Hayes (African American)
Lauren Underwood (Aftican American)
Lucy McBath (African American)
Sharice Davids (Native American)
Deb Haaland (Native American)

Is Nancy Pelosi going easy on them because they're "women of color"?

C'mon, look at what you've been doing and ADMIT that Nancy Pelosi didn't call them out because they're women of color, and you know it. You were "singled out" because of your actions.

They simply destroy the Democratic party's message discipline and its future -- which is their stated goal.

In their undisciplined twitter messages, they smear the entire Democratic party with unpalatable memes of extremism and in the end, if the Democratic party loses the house, the senate and the white house, no one on the left from slightly left to extreme left gets ANYTHING.

Wildebeests are a classic example -- as long as the herd is unified and travels together as a group, it is safe. As soon as its members veer off the discipline, they are picked by predators one by one and before long, half the members become dinner for lions, cheetahs, hyenas and vultures.

Pelosi did not call out the freshman out of the blue. She was responding to their behaviors and comments. This is the real world, they need to grow up and face the repercussions of their actions instead of having "daddy" come to their rescue. Or really, just create more chaos in our Democratic Party while facing this huge and important election.

They are elected members of Congress. And they have the right to disagree with party leadership.

And Sanders didn't "insist" on anything. He was asked a question and gave a measured response.

The growing up comes from understanding that "right" works both ways instead of crying fowl when their behavior is actually addressed.

to the world on twitter?. Blast repugs left and right and up and down but keep your beef with other Dems in-house. Be a grown man or woman and put down the phone, walk down the corridor to the other person's office and hash it out.

It came out of AOC's office from her chief of staff that some other Dems are like segregationists from the '40s.

I mean that really happened. Come on now, Repugs are our enemies not other Dems. That was the last straw with the tweeting against other Dems and those attacked went to Pelosi to complain. And now we're embroiled in this riff from some not knowing to not publicly blast members of their own party.

Why don't they know this? It's Politics 101.

And now it's metastasized from all the media attention to it into trump sending out extreme racist tweets against these four women.

47. Thinking about this conversation is interesting. Reactionary.
Sun Jul 14, 2019, 03:28 PM
Jul 2019

Without thought. I need that thought in there if our leaders are going to attack and that is what is lacking. Like Sanders comment. Not a lot there, just putting out, Pelosi isn't being fair. I want conversation of what is happening, if he is going to step into the conversation. Sanders puts no effort into this answer. Sanders has not been successful leading people as we see from 2016 and the damage by the lack of leadership. Sexual harassment was thru out his campaign and was known to Sanders yet he was unable or unwilling to address it. A leader does. His supporters walked into our convention with the purpose of being disruptive and Sanders was well aware. I do not need to hear from Sanders how Pelosi should do the job. I do not think he has earned that respect.

Attacking Democrats for funding of the camps without any context is horribly irresponsible. If these Representatives has an issue with the vote then discuss all of the issue instead of reactionary couple sentence criticism. If they do this then they should expect more thoughtful people to say hey, ... wait a minute here. There is more to this than the tweet. We kind of have this responsibility if we want to be taken serious and do not want to do damage to our party.

We are the party of adults. This is not the way adults address issues. It just becomes a back and forth. We are living in a time were a lot of conversation is reduced to simple back and forth. It is not productive.

An example would be: After having thought about this conversation just now, I felt a need to have a longer more thoughtful conversation about the issue instead of just a come back.

I want conversation again.

61. Scaling Wokeback Mountain, in which Maureen Dowd excoriates AOC
Sun Jul 14, 2019, 05:49 PM
Jul 2019

WAIT! Am I allowed to use "excoriate?" Is too close to "snipe?" Hmmm...

Anyhoo (intentional typo. Sorry, Spelling Police )

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ensorcelled me from the start. I loved the bartender-makes-good Cinderella story, the shake-up-the-capital idealistic dreams, the bravado about how the plutocrat president from Queens wouldn’t know how to deal with a Puerto Rican girl from the Bronx. And I imagined the most potent feminist partnership in American history: Nancy Pelosi as sensei, bringing her inside game, and A.O.C., the Karate Kid with a wicked Twitter game.

But instead, the 79-year-old speaker and the 29-year-old freshman are trapped in a generational and ideological tangle that poses a real threat to the Democrats’ ability to beat Donald Trump next year.

Pelosi told me, after the A.O.C. Squad voted against the House’s version of the border bill and trashed the moderates — the very people who provided the Democrats the majority — that the Squad was four people with four votes. She was talking about a legislative reality. If it was a knock, it was for abandoning the party.

That did not merit A.O.C.’s outrageous accusation that Pelosi was targeting “newly elected women of color.” She slimed the speaker, who has spent her life fighting for the downtrodden and who was instrumental in getting the first African-American president elected and passing his agenda against all odds, as a sexist and a racist.

A.O.C. should consider the possibility that people who disagree with her do not disagree with her color.

The young lawmaker went further, implying that the speaker was putting the Squad in danger, asking why Pelosi would criticize them, “knowing the amount of death threats” and attention they get. Huh? A.O.C. pulled back and said she wasn’t calling Pelosi a racist. But once you start that ball rolling, it’s hard to stop.

Ocasio-Cortez chief of staff may be the real issue. He had been part of the previous Sander's campaign.

(I admit to not being partial to Silicon Valley millionaires -especially someone who seems to promote 20th century Nazi collaborators. I also don't care for the Sarandon-style multi-millionaire "progressive" who jump to the forefront to lecture lecture us all on what she considers to be "the working class&quot .

Is Pelosi ignoring young people or is that a straw man argument ?
