Shes upending expectations: Warren fans say her appeal is about more than liberal policies
Joanna Berens freely admits that she once doubted if an academic like Elizabeth Warren could win the presidency.
That was before she watched one of the senators televised town halls.
She doesnt just have some sound bites, said Berens, a 57-year-old event planner, marveling at what she remembers seeing minutes before she was set to see Warren in person at another town hall in Miami recently. Shes listening. Shes engaging. She hears what theyre saying, and offers thoughtful comments.
Now, Berens isnt just convinced Warren would make a strong general election nominee shes thrilled about the prospect of her confronting President Donald Trump on the debate stage.
Oh my god, she said. She will flatten him.
Warrens summer-long rise in polls and fundraising success in the Democratic presidential primary is usually attributed to her detailed policy agenda or longstanding appeal to liberal diehards.
But Warren supporters and other friendly Democrats cite another reason for her ascent: Voters who expected to see an awkward policy wonk on the campaign trail are instead impressed by a candidate they describe as authentic and charismatic.
That shift has marked a key development in a primary where many Democratic voters say they are most interested in a candidate who can defeat Trump next fall. And it speaks to Warrens ability to reach beyond her natural base of progressive activists, connecting with voters who might be more ideologically moderate but nonetheless drawn to her.

(3,649 posts)The problem is that debate performance means very little when it comes time to vote. Hillary owned Trump every time they were on stage together, and her polling numbers bounced as a result. What's really important is how our candidates will perform in battleground states, especially in the midwest. Until the electoral college is reformed/abolished or there is a massive electorate shift in places like Texas and Georgia, that is the unfortunate reality.

(3,649 posts)And they have zero respect for EW. Don't get me wrong, I love EW as a candidate. I have the luxury of living in a state with a late-ish primary so if she's the leading progressive candidate and wins midwestern states by the time I vote, then I'll pull the lever for her.

(31,261 posts)The race will boil down to who can get a good fraction of the 40% or so that sat home last time to the polls.
It is all going to boil down to how those people feel about their future and the future of their children, if they are parents. The fact that Trump is losing in early polls to four named democrats indicates that many of those people are worried about their futures, what will that concern be ~15.5 months from now?

(31,261 posts)Hollary devouted little time to the Midwest industrial states and in Florida, she never visited a city with less than a million population. There are far more places in Florida with smallish cities than there are places with mega-population cities. The red Florida, the numerous lower population counties is where statewide races here are won or lost.
Winning Florida is about reducing the republican's advantage in red Florida. People that put us down ignore the fact that President Obama did that twice and won Florida twice.

(9,897 posts)I would NOT be opposed to a Warren-Buttigieg ticket...or even a Warren-Harris ticket. My vote is already certain - the Democratic nominee has it and if something bizarre resulted in no Democratic Party nominee on the ballot, I would write in a vote for "half-eaten ham sandwich" before EVER voting for the Tangerine Mussolini.
I really thought Elizabeth Warren showed something on the campaign trail in the few joint appearances she made with Hillary in 2016...I thought THAT ticket - Clinton-Warren '16 - would have been stronger but it was not to be...
No matter what happens in this absurd primary season, we MUST elect a Democratic candidate and really, really need to find a way to retake the Senate (or at least cripple McConnell).

(12,165 posts)That's why she gained some momentum. And it's why she continues to gather steam.
Warren is uniquely suited to beat Trump and will have coattails that will help dems win back the senate.
She has a friendly, passionate drive that none of the other candidates have. Harris is coming close, though.
If Warren is on the main debate stage this time, I would expect her star to continue to rise.

(12,344 posts)Warren wants to fight wealth inequality and reshape our economy and politics. We all know these are problems, so it's easy to buy into the mission, and if you do, there is no other choice, except Buttigieg who has a similar mission.
Harris doesn't seem to have a mission. She seems very smart, tough and competent which are good reasons to vote for someone, but not compelling in the same way Warren is.

(31,261 posts)You may have doubts about her going into a rally of her's, but when you walk out you are a fire breathing convert.
I would love to see her do a townhall near where I live in Florida, I am even going to contribute to her campaign so that my name is on her Florida list. I want to see in person what I have heard about her ability to connect with voters.
