Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumBiden support slips below 30% in new poll
Former Vice President Joe Biden's support in the latest Hill-HarrisX poll of Democratic voters has fallen below 30 percent, his lowest mark in the survey so far.
The poll, released on Monday, found that 29 percent of likely Democratic primary voters support Biden as their first choice for president, while 16 percent back Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
This marks a 4-point drop for Biden from an identical poll conducted two weeks ago and immediately following the first 2020 Democratic debates. It also represents a 17-point drop from when same poll was first conducted in May, a month after Biden formally launched his campaign bid.
Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) retained their spots, with Harris getting 11 percent and Warren trailing close behind at 9 percent.
South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who ranked as high as third place at one earlier poll, slipped to sixth place, garnering just 1 percent of support.
Former Texas Congressman Beto O'Rourke, who has been lagging in national polls over the last few months, notched up 2 points to 3 percent. A large number of respondents, 17 percent, were undecided.
The poll can be viewed as another setback for Biden, whose campaign has been grappling with attacks on his civil rights record in recent weeks.

(92,409 posts)of just presenting the poll results.
and putting emphasis on one part, but minimizing the other part:
"Yet the poll continues to show Biden with a double digit lead over Sanders, and he has more than twice the support of Harris and more than three times the support of Warren to this point.
The Hill-HarrisX poll surveyed 1,003 voters between July 12 and July 13. The sampling margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points."
I wonder why that is?

(5,376 posts)No snipping nor jumping around was done in the OP.
The first 6 paragraphs of the article were quoted in order.
The posting guidelines on DU say that for copyright reasons quotes should be limited to about 4 paragraph.
I thought I could post 6 to include results for Buttigieg and O'Rourke since the paragraphs were fairly short.
The Hill article made a point of emphasizing the trend of Biden's support dropping in the Hill-HarrisX poll, they stressed this in the headline, the lead paragraph and the third paragraph.
They also made a point in the 6th paragraph to stress that Biden, Warren and Harris were in a statistical tie, all being within the poll's margin of error.

The BOLD HIGHTLIGHTING really does the trick

As an aside, from my perspective, national polls mean very little, since that isn't how primaries or general elections are done
State polls have more weighting, though it is still a long way off until the primaries

(49,041 posts)128 of the 446 Democrats and independents (I'm guessing these were independent who identified as leaning Democratic, since that's usually what pollsters ask when polling on primaries) who were asked whom they'd vote for in the Democratic primary.
The pollster did NOT ask that question of Republicans.
Look at the VERY FIRST line of the table.
Anyway, of the 446 people polled, 371 were Democrats and 75 were independents.
112 self-identified as Strong liberal. Biden got 28 of those (see the second line of that table), for 25% of that most liberal group.
124 Lean liberal. 33 of those for Biden, or 27%.
174 Moderate, and 55 of those for Biden, or 32%.
24 Lean conservative (as some Democrats do), with Biden getting 6 of those. The table says that's 27%, but it looks like 25% to me.
12 identifying as Strong conservative, with Biden getting 4 of those, or 33%
So of the 128 people polled from Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents who chose Biden, 61 were liberals, 55 were moderates, and 10 were conservative.
PLEASE read polls more carefully before posting about them here.

It can't be credibly argued any more that this is just name recognition, that voters aren't aware of the other candidates. They're aware of them. And Biden still has 2-3 times the support of his three closest rivals.

(22,236 posts)to be consistently dropping in the polls all the time. I think the only thing keeping him afloat is because there are so many candidates still in the pool. Once a bunch of them start dropping out, the other top 3 or 4 candidates will benefit at the expense of Biden, and Joe's lead will most likely vanish. If his numbers don't start increasing by early August, I think it's curtains for him by October.

I wouldn't be surprised if his handlers convince him to call in sick for the next debate. I think that's the only way he can prevent his numbers from going into a free fall.

Biden has nearly twice the support Sanders has.
Nearly three times the support Harris has, despite all the media attention she got for her attack on him in the debate.
And more than three times the support Warren has.
As I recall, there were lots of predictions that once voters got a better look at our candidates in the debates, the polls would look entirely different.
The other candidates got that attention.
Biden still has a clear, commanding lead.
