Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumIn October 2003, the candidate most respondents saw as most electable was Sen. Joe Leiberman
In October 2003, as Democrats were jockeying for the opportunity to face George W. Bush in the 2004 presidential election, The Post and our polling partners at ABC News surveyed Democratic voters to gauge their preferences for a nominee. At the time, former Vermont governor Howard Dean had a slight lead. The candidate who the most respondents saw as most electable, though, was Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut.
Well, given the margins of error, Lieberman, Dean and two other candidates were all sort of mushed together as most supported and most electable. Thats one key pattern here: The candidates that are seen as most electable are generally also those who have the most support.
So the eventual nominee, Sen. John F. Kerry of Massachusetts, was in fifth on both metrics. Not much support, not generally seen as electable...

(19,480 posts)If Lieberman had won the nomination, maybe he would have won the general election. It's all hypothetical, of course, but we can't say the respondents were wrong.

(9,688 posts)This is exactly how I remember the race. That's why I'm not taking the supposed ups and downs of the horse race all that seriously right now.
(To respond to other posts on the thread, though, there's no way Joe Lieberman would have won the general election. He was not in fact "the most electable," as the primaries pretty much proved early on. I followed that election very closely, and Lieberman really went nowhere. I think that his early boost came largely from the fact that he was Gore's VP nominee).

(11,257 posts)I'm glad I'm not the only one having flashbacks to 2004. I like Biden and will be all in if he's the nominee, but he's also so fundamentally flawed that I really hope it's somebody else.

(89,259 posts)even in the worst winter weather. people on the ground saw that.
ground game often matters more early on than big media headlines.
but this time around Biden does have certain advantages and he is no Joe Lieberman.
but Biden is more like Kerry and he is getting the same support Kerry got although Kerry did better with women and more liberal voters.

(36,858 posts)GOP called him 'Loserman' when he ran with Gore.
McCain wanted Lieberman as his VP.
The big republicans wanted Romney for VP.
The religious right wanted Sarah Palin.
McCain got stuck.

(2,419 posts)From my viewpoint as a progressive, Lieberman was awful on the issues. (Please don't ask for links, but I spent a lot of time in Connecticut, and I consider it self-evident.)
A good example of the Democratic Party's drift to the right (drift? -- hell, a collapse!) Why I'm glad there is a Bernie Sanders, AOC, Elizabeth Warren progressive wing today.
Not that I'm taking a position -- yet -- on who I'd vote for to beat Trump in 2020. A whole different issue.
