VP Joe Biden speaking at NAACP forum, hosted by April Ryan. (Original Post) George II Jul 2019 OP
I've been trying to figure out what word he means to say when he says "I'm not being solicitous" Demit Jul 2019 #1
I think he means he's not just soliciting support. He's being sincere. You do often hear the word highplainsdem Jul 2019 #7
He might be using the word that way, but it's a pretty archaic usage. Demit Jul 2019 #8
I agree. As I said, he should use another word. highplainsdem Jul 2019 #9

He did it once before at a rally. Here, towards the end when he says "I'm not being solicitous, I'm being deadly earnest." Supercilious?

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:

"solicitous" used to describe the behavior of someone who's insincere, who's just trying to get something or get you to buy something: a solicitous salesman, for example.

But he should use a different word.

Or, better yet, just stress that he's being sincere.

Or, still better, just express his ideas and feelings. I think people can hear his sincerity.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

I think most people understand "solicitous" to mean caring and concerned. If he's using it to describe someone who is trying to get you to buy something, so he can say he's not that—well, it's too obscure. And head-scratching. It's poor communication.
