CNN announces climate town hall with 2020 Democrats

CNN announced Thursday it will hold a Democratic presidential town hall focused on climate change. The event will take place on Sept. 4 in New York City. The network is inviting all the candidates who meet the threshold for the September primary debates of garnering 2 percent support in at least four different polls.

Former Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), former Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-Texas), Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) all qualify, according to CNN’s tally.

Several presidential contenders have put forward climate plans of their own that they say are best slated to reverse the effects of climate change. Many of them seek to pose a contrast to President Trump who withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accord and has praised the use of coal as a key energy source.

CNN said the format for its climate town hall will be similar to other events it held earlier this year in which contenders appeared back-to-back throughout the evening.

The most important political issue he thinks we are facing is Voting Rights because we have to protect our Democracy in order to accomplish all of the other things.

This has to rise to the top of discussion in this election. We have it all over the Republicans on this issue, not only in fixing it but in who the hell caused it in the first place by denial etc. The public's experience is finally starting to meet the science, unfortunately, so that should help.

Someone could say that their top priority was raising the minimum wage, for example, or universal healthcare -- and still say that the biggest "geopolitical threat" was climate change.

Geopolitical refers to politics, related to geography, on an international level. (Another geopolitical threat would be pollution of the oceans.)

Inslee doesn't get to 2% because they don't cover him. Now they use the low poll standing which they helped engineer as an excuse to exclude him. This is their window of opportunity. They host a climate debate that they crippled in advance, claim they did their part, and return to their regularly scheduled programming- Trump's tweets and endless hand-wringing over Democrats' inadequate responses to the party of treason, autocracy, and economic and environmental plunder.

32. Inslee announced 2 weeks BEFORE O'Rourke, and Inslee's top and overriding issue
Fri Jul 26, 2019, 11:09 PM
Jul 2019

has ALWAYS been climate change.

Inslee announced March 1.

O'Rourke announced March 14.

https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/politics/gov-jay-inslee-launches-presidential-campaign-with-optimism-about-halting-climate-change/

March 1

Washington state Gov. Jay Inslee plunged into the 2020 Democratic presidential primary race Friday, mixing one part dire warning and three parts sunny optimism about a national campaign centered on halting catastrophic global climate change.

During his announcement before a crowd of perhaps 200 supporters at A&R Solar, a solar-panel-installation company based in South Seattle, Inslee pointed to increasingly intense forest fires and other potential effects of rising global temperatures.

“The science on this is abundantly clear. We have a very short period of time to act, and whether we shrink to this challenge or rise to it is the vital question of our time,” Inslee said, vowing to stand out as the only candidate who’d make climate change the number one national priority if elected president.

SNIP

Inslee has made climate change a signature issue throughout his political career, championing clean energy and efforts to tax carbon during more than a decade in Congress. He co-wrote a 2007 book, “Apollo’s Fire,” that called for a national emphasis on research and deployment of clean-energy technology akin to the Apollo project that led to the moon landing.

March 4

Climate change is poised to be a big issue in the race for the Democratic nomination. But there hasn’t been a candidate who has made the issue the center of his or her pitch for president — until now.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee launched his bid for president Friday to address what he called in his first campaign video “the most urgent challenge of our time.”

While the crowded field for the Democratic nomination already includes five senators co-sponsoring the ambitious Green New Deal resolution, Inslee is prioritizing climate change to the exclusion of other issues. He said “climate change” or “global warming” in the video at least 10 times. It was the first, last and only issue he mentioned in his video announcement.

It's an issue Inslee has been passionate about as the governor of the other Washington since 2013. "We need to get something done. This is a moment of great peril but of also great promise, and it needs urgent action," he told The Energy 202 in an interview last month.

Beto released his Climate Plan on April 29th. Inslee released his on May 3rd. So yes, Beto was the FIRST candidate to release a Climate Plan. Also, in the article I tracked down to prove that fact is also the quote of O'Rourke where he said Climate Change is his "north star" issue...

Beto O'Rourke releases $5 trillion plan to combat climate crisis
April 29th

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/beto-o-rourke-releases-5-trillion-plan-combat-climate-crisis-n999416

“The greatest threat we face — which will test our country, our democracy, every single one of us — is climate change,” the former Texas congressman said in a statement accompanying the release of the plan. "We have one last chance to unleash the ingenuity and political will of hundreds of millions of Americans to meet this moment before it's too late.”

On the campaign trail, O’Rourke regularly takes questions about climate change, including on Friday, when he told a questioner in Las Vegas that it was his “north star” issue — citing his children and the need to act to protect their generation.

Inslee has been working against climate change for decades. Also, as a Representative in Congress he introduced a climate change bill.

And he announced his candidacy for the Presidency weeks before O'Rourke announced his. Every article about Inslee's announcement noted that he was the only candidate to center his campaign around climate change. O'Rourke must have decided that was a good idea.

Can you provide any link showing that O'Rourke had been talking about climate change for decades? Or showing that Inslee wasn't the first announced candidate to center his campaign around climate change?

https://www.amazon.com/Apollos-Fire-Igniting-Americas-Economy/dp/1597261750/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=jay+inslee&qid=1564204922&s=gateway&sr=8-1

From 2007:

From Publishers Weekly

To free the U.S. of fossil fuel dependency while boosting the economy, we need the kind of visionary leadership that led to the Apollo moon landings in 1969, according to Inslee and Hendricks in this energetic articulation of a clean-energy future. That vision is sadly lacking under the current administration, reports Washington State Congressman Inslee in several caustic sidebars about his contentious energy discussions with President Bush and Vice-President Cheney. His first-person anecdotes lighten this otherwise earnest book, based on initiatives of the Apollo Alliance, an advocacy group and think tank uniting unions, environmental groups and business organizations committed to fostering a green economy. Redesigning the car, investing in solar power, mining wind for power, exploring the nascent technology of wave energy, using energy more efficiently and working clean coal and safe nuclear power into the equation are among the authors' prescriptions. Inslee is primary congressional sponsor of the New Apollo Energy Act and on the Apollo Alliance advisory board; coauthor Hendricks is a member of the alliance's steering committee. A brief foreword by Bill Clinton waxes enthusiastic about the synergy between the book, the alliance and the proposed legislation. (Nov. 2)
