(14,565 posts)That number should not be possible, even if it was your stated goal to reach that number or above. I have never seen anything like it.
Anyone knocking Beto for losing to Ted Cruz is an outright fool. Beto exceeded expectation in that race by 9.6%, according to 538. That means a Democrat who matched expectation would have lost by 12 points. And that is exactly correct. There is no question that many of our 2020 presidential candidates would have lost by double digits in that race. The best performers outside Beto might have lost by 6-8%.

(205,467 posts)But I sure wouldn't wish it on him now, either.
However, he's completely right on the North Korea negotiations. With his background in nuclear physics and his talent for diplomacy, he negotiated the last successful agreement we had with North Korea when he went there in 1994 on behalf of the Clinton administration - with Kim Jong-un's grandfather. Clinton SoS Albright continued that agreement with his son, Kim Jong-il, who, when Bush* was selected, asked if he couldn't continue dealing with Albright. The agreement held until 2002 when Bush* broke the understanding when he included North Korea in his Axis of Evil pronouncement and relations have deteriorated ever since.
Jimmy Carter makes it a point to get to know and understand people. The North Koreans wanted "respect" so that's what he gave them, it was that simple. And he also impressed them with his in-depth knowledge of the issues. That's the same reason he successfully negotiated the Camp David Accords with Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin. He got to know both men, what they needed, and he persisted. We do a lot worse - and have - dealing with North Korea.

(85,998 posts)...Swalwell's worried about who will watch his two kids under two, among other things.
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) said Tuesday that he will make a decision on a 2020 presidential run by the end of March and that he will make gun violence and climate change key campaign issues if he does decide to run.
Asked during a question-and-answer session at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics when he plans to announce a decision on a White House bid, Swalwell said by the end of the month.
There are three questions Ive asked myself, he said. Do I think I can make a difference? Do I think I can win? Because I dont think even if you can make a difference, if you cant win, its a hell of a sacrifice to take your family and friends and home constituents through.
And then three, can we get the child care for two kids under two to do it?
