Joe Biden called Kamala Harris a 'kid' and it has not gone down well

As the California senator walked to the stage of the Fox Theatre in Detroit to shake Biden’s hand, he can be heard telling the 53-year-old congresswoman:

Go easy on me, kid.

Harris appears to smile at Mr Biden before she's heard to simply say: “How are you doing, you good?’

Kamala Harris' press secretary was one of the first to raise eyebrows over the word

I know Bidenisms and "kid" certainly is one, but urging a 54-year-old U.S. senator and opponent "go easy on me, kid" is not a great start for his efforts to reset with this debate.

UGH. I am very sure that Biden was not intending to do old man patronising... BUT...
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

in the broader context, calling someone old is generally insulting, and calling someone young generally is not.

And in this case, being considered old IS an issue Biden legitimately has to deal with; being considered young is NOT an issue Harris has to deal with. So one arguably calls for some sensitivity, the other does not.

165. What was it then? Calling a 54 year old professional woman a "kid,"
Thu Aug 1, 2019, 08:58 PM
Aug 2019

would be perceived by many to be patronizing. I wouldn't think that Biden deliberately would say something diminishing, that would remind people that she is black, and that black men were often diminished by being called, "boy."

So I figured it was just a gaffe.

https://www.newsweek.com/joe-biden-kamala-harris-go-easy-me-kid-1452062

One analysis from popular Twitter account "Feminist Next Door," accused Biden of dropping a "single sentence quip intended to simultaneously diminish Harris and characterize her as overly aggressive."

"He'll say it was a joke, which is what his supporters will claim while belittling critics as humorless and aggressive. Women know it well," the account tweeted.

Another social media user, Rev. Laura Everett, agreed, writing: "'Go easy on me, kid' may pass to some as folksy banter, but underneath is centuries of sexism and racism, and a presumption of privilege where niceness avoids critique."

Activist Susan DuFresne also condemned the remark as "blatant sexism," writing in a tweet: "While watching the beginning [of the debate] I told my husband it seemed Kamala Harris was upset-like someone said something to her. Later, heard Joe Biden told her, 'Go easy on me, KID'."

uses self-effacing humor. In a sense, he was flattering her, because yeah at 54 she’s only a kid
to someone in his seventies. Kid is also gender neutral and friendly but not over-familiar. I saw his remark as a “no hard feelings for last time,” and an acknowledgement of her power as a debater but certainly not a literal plea.

He is an older man. If that repulses you or you think it renders him unfit for office, vote for
a younger candidate.

she said “can’t promise you, old rascal,” or some such variation, I would not be wasting space here
painting him as the victim of her ageism, which of course is not analogous as a non-PC evil in our
liberal world to sexism or racism.

In any case, as I said, the OP is meant to stir it up by ignoring context and intent to make something sinister and incriminating out of an utterly benign comment meant as an ice-breaker.

And when you can’t argue for malignant intent, professional disrespect, a telling pattern of racism and sexism, you will then yourself, go ageist.

was emphasizing his own age. He was actually born in the same year as that very old movie.

And Ingrid Bergman was 27 in 1942 -- half the age of Kamala Harris now. In that era, an older man calling a 27 year old woman a "kid" wouldn't have the same impact as an older man using that term TODAY to describe a professional, accomplished 54 year old.

his old school charm.

In fact, many of us feel we could use an “ old hand” to mop up after Trump, which will not be easy for the inexperienced. We also feel we want an elder statesman type known
and respected on the world stage to sort out the horrible hash Trump has made of foreign policy.

Can Harris get Iran back to the negotiating table? Reassure our allies so they don’t ar: themselves with more nukes?

We are perilously close to a nuclear conflict. Old as in wise and experienced is not a pejorative.

Anyone who has problems with age will need a re-examination of their myths, their ageist issues, if
they are to do the most natural thing in the world: age.

older family and friends (by that age I had been married, had 3 children, lost one and divorced) until I realized it wasn't said as an insult, saying that I was 'a' kid, but with affection more like Bogie to Bergman in Casablanca and in the newer (thrn) 1982 song hit, Key Largo by Bertie Higgins.

Since I've gotten the feeling that Biden likes and respects Harris, and she him, I'm very sure he said it with affection not condensation. It wasn't a great choice of words for him but at the same time it's very 'Biden' being Biden and just being the warm person he is.

Actually if Biden wins the primary I suspect Harris is way up near, it not at, the top of his list for VP and I think she knows that too.

There are so many other things for us to get upset about, this is just another bs attempt at distraction from real issues our country has.

I love that people are becoming more aware and trying to be mindful of others, but it would be useful if they used just a little discernment and put things in context instead of going off half-cocked every single time some public figure says something they find archaic or offensive. It's tiresome. Trump is one thing - we know he's a racist, vulgar asshole, but Biden is just an old guy who grew up with Humphrey Bogart movies and his humor may be a little behind the times, but so what? It's clearly obvious he was using humor to diffuse a once-tense situation, not trying to offend or belittle (you know, like Trump does every time he opens his mouth). Context.

No? Then this is just faux-rage.

If she was offend then he should apologize. But she is a strong-ass women. Had she taken offense I think we all would have known it on the spot. In reality this will help him more than hurt. Common man Joe. I think it shows they are collegial and hope they are both on the ticket.

And if people are having to dredge this kind of stuff up to attack Biden, then he is sitting pretty.

About a month ago I was carted while purchasing cigarettes and I thanked the clerk. I've quit since then.

Why is no one upset about her calling him Senator Biden later DURING the debate?

"He's authentic", "He's real", "He is a people's person"

So many memes!

But now he's running for President the same people are now trying to have it the other way. What a farce.

Joe is that kind of elder gentleman who uses euphemisms to break ice, make people laugh, make people comfortable. If we condone this we are really going to enable a shift to humourless, stiff behaviour.

I'm amazed that posters who defend these petty criticisms don't realize they're only aiding Joe Biden's nomination bid while making themselves look and sound:

RIDICULOUS!

Try harder.

It just tickles me pink that the op laces it with their own ageism. I couldn't have made it any bigger of a joke if I tried.
