Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumAre Democrats Overlooking Their Most Electable Candidate?
In the past six months, Elizabeth Warren, Pete Buttigieg, and Kamala Harris have all surged in the Democratic primary and cemented themselves in the top tierthe group of five candidates that includes Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders. Voters have seen something in each of them, whether its Warrens plans, Buttigiegs knack for articulately answering questions, or Harriss ability to command the debate stage. But if beating Donald Trump is priority number one, Democratic voters should turn their attention to a candidate who hasnt broken out yetMinnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar.
Its easy to forget, but last fall and winter, Klobuchar was considered a serious contender for the Democratic nomination. Her questioning of Brett Kavanaugh drew widespread praise from Democrats. She placed fourth in one February poll of Iowa caucus goers, ahead of both Warren and Harris. Her candidacy was met with excitement by a host of political commentators from across the anti-Trump spectrum. Now, however, shes polling at just one or two percent. Thats a shame, because Klobuchar is what Americans used to agree a president should be before the rise of fake it til you make it cultureexperienced, knowledgeable, and effective. Klobuchar has served in the Senate for over a decade, whereas Warren was first elected in 2012. Harris has less than three years of experience.
Klobuchar hasnt just been marking time. One study determined that she was the most effective Senator of the 115th Congress. She also ranked first in bills signed into law in the 114th Congress. During her tenure, she has been the primary sponsor of thirty-three bills signed into law, covering a diverse group of issue areas including infrastructure, addiction recovery, and promoting women in entrepreneurship. By contrast, during his much longer career, Bernie Sanders has only been the lead on seven successful bills.
Klobuchar is also prepared to hit the ground running as president. Last week, she released her plan for more than 100 actions in her first 100 days, including steps to fight climate change, improve access to health care, lower prescription drug costs, and address income inequality. Most importantly, in contrast to other candidates, whose plans more closely resemble fantasies, Klobuchars action items are grounded in reality and can be achieved through executive action or pragmatic legislation. Aside from Joe Biden, no other candidate in the field would be as prepared for the job on day one.
(snip)
She has legitimate progressive credentialsshe has voted with Bernie Sanders 88 percent of the timebut she hasnt adopted some of her colleagues more extreme positions. She does not advocate for getting rid of private health insurance, which is in step with what most Americans want. Nor does she think we should abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which also aligns with the majority of voters. It may be easy for Republicans to portray Kamala Harris or Bernie Sanders as socialists who care more about undocumented immigrants than citizens. But theyd have a much tougher time painting Klobuchar with such a broad brush.

Joe Biden is simply dominating among moderate Democrats leaving little room for anyone else trying to gain a following there.

(5,376 posts)Yes, the progressives are splitting their support between Warren and Sanders (and others). So?
Joe Biden is DOMINATING among the moderates, garnering the lion share of that portion of the party. That's just a fact.
Hey, many progressives would love to see other moderates take support away from Biden, but it is just not happening.
As it stands now, Klobuchar has a good shot at making the September debate, but her campaign is just not catching on, Biden has taken all the oxygen out of the room for other moderates.

(11,990 posts)Of course there can be more than one. The problem isn't that she's competing with a stronger moderate in Biden, it's that she's competing with stronger moderates in Biden, Harris, Buttigieg, O'Rourke, and maybe others. She does not have a commanding presence. Maybe it's a Minnesota thing, but she's about as exciting as a Mondale. As I said elsewhere, the moderate "lane" is too crowded, and she's driving a sub-compact.

$15 an hour was extreme last time around, and thats just for starters.
So easy to be cavalierly dismissive of s bold vision by obliquely claiming its not grounded in reality... sadly, theres a lot of that going around.

I will vote for whoever gets nominated but my personal preference is one of the more progressive candidates like Warren or if she had a legit chance Marianne Williamson, who finished strong in that debate. She was right on in describing the monstrous threat of Trump and his racist behavior.

(28,081 posts)"Minnesota Passive Aggressive". You can see this in Amy whenever she responds to an email. She & her staff have raised the non-response response to an art form. (She also has some of the rudest staff members, even if you're call to complement her on something.)
Also note, she is not popular with the progressives in her own state party. The "powers that be" love her, the rank and file activists, who do tilt more to the left, have not been impressed.
But if you want centrist & status quo, Amy's your candidate.

(47,517 posts)Good governance with a capital G
My experience working with U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar causes me to take issue with Patrick Condons recent column (?I get things done, says Klobuchar, July 30). The senator has always seemed to me to be an able, committed, effective public servant.
I spent 12 years on the Edina City Council, during which the council traveled yearly to Washington, D.C., to participate in an idea-generating conference with other city leaders. Each year we scheduled meetings with our representatives. Former U.S. Rep. Erik Paulsen met personally with us only once, assigning an underling all other times. Klobuchar never did that! She personally attended every meeting and listened to our issues regarding airport noise and other city issues. Klobuchar asked questions, never rushed us out and authored and supported changes that responded to our residents concerns.
That is good governance with a capitol G. She is not using a pile of bills in order to sell herself to voters! The senators bills are issues her constituents want addressed. In this time of split government and a Senate majority leader who will not even allow a vote on bills protecting our election process, lets recognize Klobuchar for the smart, effective leader that she has been and will continue to be.

(146,324 posts)I like her a lot. However, she faces a real problem with name recognition as one of the crowd of primary candidates, and it doesn't look like she's going to be able to make the jump to become a real contender. She's down in the pack of people who are just hanging on and not rising in poll results.
She might possibly be a contender for VP, if Biden gets the nomination. Her positions align pretty well with his, and she has better recognition in the Midwest than nationally. We'll see.
