Beto O'Rourke makes first campaign stop on 400-mile blast through Iowa

Houston Chronicle

Beto O’Rourke’s first foray into Iowa as a presidential candidate will be a three-day romp over 400 miles.

Shortly after announcing his campaign for president in an early morning video to supporters on Thursday, O’Rourke arrived in Keokuk, in southeast Iowa.

“Keokuk is the first stop in our campaign to be president of the United States,” O’Rourke said to a roar of applause at Lost Canvas, a coffee shop and art gallery.

O’Rourke told the crowd that with so many “great” candidates running in 2020, it is important for Democrats to avoid negative campaigning against one another.

Beto answered every question. MSNBC started to cut away, changed their mind.

We supported him for Senate. I felt he had a terrific future. But for us, right now he's not the one.
Obama inspired, O'Rourke doesn't. I like the guy but that's not enough to get my Primary vote, so far.

You see, it seems that Democratic presidents always have the task of cleaning up Republican messes. Obama's first job was harnessing the wheel of the ship of state that was spinning out of control and setting it right. I had confidence in him. No so much Beto.

I think we need someone who can handle foreign affairs skillfully. Trump has turned our country into a disgrace on the world stage. And I believe that we're going to need a president who understands economic problems and knows how to solve them without crushing the working class. We have people who have tossed their hats in the ring who are strong in these areas. So I'm waiting to declare my solid preference and will wait for the debates.

Anyone who doesn't make that distinction and place that variable first and foremost is making a huge mistake. Foreign affairs messaging is not going to defeat Donald Trump.

Beto has nowhere to go in Texas. He can't defeat Cornyn and wisely understands that. The governorship is not up for another 4 years. It was either put his great charisma on idle or seek the presidency. Beto fits the Texas of 2034 but not the Texas of 2019.

I'm not surprised he made the astute choice.

I don't see Beto delivering. Not at this point. But I have an open mind and there's a long way to go. The debates will be key. I'll be able to get a sense of policy, depth and poise. Right now he isn't delivering the goods, imo. So he's off my radar.
