VT Insights: Trump budget gives big targets for Bernie Sanders' 2020 presidential campaign

Donald Trump's proposed cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security give Bernie Sanders and the rest of the 2020 Democratic presidential field ammunition for taking on the president in the next election.

For Sanders, especially, the likely victims of the cuts laid out in the budget line up well with his populist platform that focuses on challenges faced by working families, seniors and "the most vulnerable."

In a video published Tuesday on his Senate Facebook page, Sanders called the budget "breathtaking in its hypocrisy and its degree of cruelty," pointing out that as a candidate Trump promised to protect social safety net programs.

"This is a budget for corporate CEOs, who already make over 300 times what their workers make, this is a budget for Wall Street, this is a budget for the billionaire class. This is a budget that must and will be defeated. We need a budget that works for Americans, not just Donald Trump and the 1 percent."
