AUSTIN When Julián Castro returned to his home state two days after getting the best of Beto O'Rourke in an exchange during the first Democratic presidential debate, the former San Antonio mayor had a smile on his face and a one-liner at the ready.
"They were writing me off as the other Texan," Castro told an enthusiastic gathering of Democrats at a downtown Austin watering hole. "But that is no more. I am the Texan in this race.
The June 27 encounter on the crowded debate stage in Miami pushed Castro out of the shadow of O'Rourke, his fellow Texan who earned national media attention during his high-powered but unsuccessful 2018 race against Republican U.S. Ted Cruz. (89,271 posts)Former San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro, meanwhile, continues to lag far behind in the low single digits, according to the poll conducted over a four-day period ending July 27.
"I think its general enthusiasm because (O'Rourke's) numbers are higher than they were going back to May," said UT-Tyler political science professor Mark Owens, a co-director of the university's Texas Opinion Survey. "He's the candidate that's known."
U.S. Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Kamala Harris of California followed the leaders with 15.4 percent, 10.6 percent and 8.5 percent, respectively. Castro's showing among the Democratic respondents was 3.3 percent and the remainder of the crowded field drew 1.5 percent or less.
