Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumPlease think of making a small contribution to Tom Steyer's presidential campaign
It appears as though he is very close to meeting the polling threshold to qualify for the next round of debates:

It is believed that he isn't close in terms of donors because he hasn't released his campaign's figures yet and it is just assumed that since he is a lower polling candidate that got into the race late (not to mention wealthy), not many people are donating to his campaign; however, I think his voice would be a welcome one, especially given that some of our candidates have lost their focus about what this election is truly about: GETTING TRUMP OUT OF OFFICE!
I said that if he got close to meeting the polling requirement that I would send him a small donation to help him meet the donor requirement, so, I am doing that now and I hope you all will do the same!

(7,869 posts)...to promote impeachment, and he is still one of the candidates that is most vociferous in going after Trump.
I'd much rather have him on the debate stage going after Trump than a few other candidates who think their path to the nomination is by attacking popular fellow Democrats.

(45,114 posts)He a great American and I think it's about time he's gotten something for his money.
He leads every other liberal donor, including Michael Bloomberg and George Soros, contributing almost $248 million cumulatively to candidates, PACs and other political organizations. Much of that cash goes toward PACs and organizations that spend money independently of candidates, including attack ads on Republicans.
Steyer has previously considered running for office himself, floating the idea of running for U.S. House in 2016 and California governor in 2018. He made a trip to Iowa earlier this year where he was expected to announce his 2020 presidential bid. Instead he said he was not going to run in 2020, opting to use his platform to continue calling for the impeachment of President Trump. Steyer didnt immediately give a clear reason why he reversed his decision not to run.

(16,403 posts)But Im not sure it means he is a viable candidate for president. Dont misunderstand, I think there are quite a few on the debate stages that shouldnt be there either. Its nothing personal against Steyer.

(5,231 posts)He originally did well informing the public about the excesses of Trump. However, hubris has taken over and now he wants to be the boss. We don't need another billionaire, no experience, businessman candidate.

(7,869 posts)I do so because I want their voice in our debates.
If he were on stage relentlessly attacking Trump, I think it would be beneficial to Democrats as a whole.

(1,332 posts)Im sure Mr. Steyer is a very nice guy, but no. No multimillionaire or billionaires, been there, done that. I want an experienced politician ( which I dont happen to think is a dirty word). No businessman. The purpose of a business is to make money for the owner or the stockholders. That is not the purpose of running the government. Let him donate to someone who, you know, has a freaking chance of winning.

He spends more than every other liberal donor, including Bloomberg and Soros. I'm damn glad to hear what he has to say. His platform is much more than impeachment.

(261 posts)Hes still a bit opaque and Im not trusting him yet, but theres something about a billionaire saying that we need to do something about income inequality that made me wonder if he could disarm the oligarchs. My concern with both Sanders and Warren is the headwinds they face from the financial powers. But well see. It would be interesting to see him on the debate stage. But criminey, it is full.

They seem to have accepted her more lately, at least in comparison to Sanders. But an endorsement is very different from a run. You must think so to pose the question. Im just feeling very discouraged by the power of the oligarchs lately. Decades ago there was a better balance between government, workers, and financial powers. Now it seems so off kilter in favor of the oligarchs Im not sure it can be wrested away from them. And its not just in the US but world wide. There was a Guardian article by George Monbiot speculating that this is what has given rise to autocratic clowns: Boris Johnson, Duterte, Erdogan, Bolsinaro, Modi, etc. people are feeling hopeless and helpless and give way to their hate and the desire to blow things up.
Ive also been feeling discouraged by the Amazon model treating workers like robots, so theyre time down to the second on individual tasks. Its not illegal but its emotional torture. Greed just seems to have taken over with the drop in marginal tax rates. Im having a bad day.
