Biden faces challenge from Warren in Iowa

Joe Biden has had a steady lead in Iowa polls, but Democratic strategists say Elizabeth Warren is rising and poses the greatest risk to him in the Hawkeye state.

Iowa has long been seen as a tough state for Biden, as its caucus-goers tend to go for more progressive candidates.
That would seem to fit the bill for Warren, though she is battling fellow progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) for support among Iowa caucus-goers.

A Monmouth poll released last week provided great news for Warren, showing her with 19 percent and ahead of both Sanders (9 percent) and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), who won 11 percent.
But Biden was still in first, with 28 percent.

“I would definitely say she’s is the largest threat to Joe Biden,” Pat Rynard, founder of the popular Iowa Democratic news site Iowa Starting Line, said of Warren.

“My main observation is that she is the coalition candidate. She is the one in the field who can appeal to progressive activists while not scaring away the rest of the voters.”

Democratic consultant Tracy Sefl, who hails from Iowa, said Warren — who spent the first 5 months of her campaign tailor-focused on the state — is gaining traction because her campaign fits well with what Iowa voters want.

1. I like Warren so much more than Biden. But, I don't think Iowa matters that much

I'd love to see her gain some ground. I wish we didn't have this horrible system of voting for President.

I wish it was one person one vote and that each vote counted the same and we all vote on the same day. Is so BS. Sorry, I just need to vent.

Will be interesting to see how it all sorts out. Best of luck to both Warren and Biden, they are both great candidates.

Iowa, demographically and geographically, simply isn't relevant. It is, or used to be, a great spring board. You used to almost always have to finish in top 3. No question Warren is better perceived by party activists. They, like me, are a bit more progressive. However, Biden ( and I'm not supporting him at this time) would be a much better general election canidate... JUST my opinion.

9. It certainly should not. Same with New Hampshire

Unfortunately the candidates spend all their efforts and money on these two states and if they don't win, they drop out. I am hoping that, since this year Super Tuesday will come a month after these two that (most of them) will stay at least through this date.

And... welcome to DU

We have to quit being Kellyannes. Spin towards one's wishes is perceived to be convincing somehow.

Whether it's Bernie, Pete, Kamala or Elizabeth, #2 is always just a hair or two or three away from beating Joe. That's been the narrative since he got in.

Medicare for all, vaporous spending proposals, predictable lines about the rigged system, hazy foreign policy, isolationist trade policy. Well, it didn't work last time.

7. That same poll says Iowans see health care as the top issue and prefer a public option to

Medicare for all, 56-21.

https://www.monmouth.edu/polling-institute/reports/monmouthpoll_IA_080819/

The top issue on Iowa Democrats’ minds when choosing a presidential nominee continues to be health care (55%), followed by environmental concerns (18% climate change and 12% environment in general). These top two results are in line with voter concern levels in the April poll. Other issues important to voters include beating Trump (15%), immigration (14%), education (7%), taxes (7%), jobs (6%), income inequality (6%), civil rights (6%), foreign policy (5%), and guns (5%). It should be noted that gun issues were tracking steadily at 3% during the first three nights of the poll, but shot up to 10% in interviews conducted on Sunday after the recent mass shootings. Health care went from 58% to 44% during this same time frame.

On the issue of health insurance policy, a majority (56%) of likely Iowa Democratic caucusgoers say they would prefer to allow people to opt into Medicare, while just 21% say they want a Medicare for All type of system with no private insurance. Another 13% would like to see tighter cost regulations on the current system and 4% want to leave the current system basically as it is now.

That favors Biden.

The same poll also shows that Iowa Democrats consider Biden more electable than Warren. And his margin over the other Democrats including Warren is greater with people who don't hold the optimistic belief that almost any Democrats would beat Trump. With voters who think the election will be closer and maybe only one or two Democrats could beat Trump, Biden's considered more electable than Warren 41-13, with the other Democratic candidates doing even worse than Warren.

Traction to catch Biden... IMHO. And, unless there’s a earth moving shift in the AA vote, it just isn’t gonna happen
