I remember when people were considered to have ruined their lives if they didn't go straight to college after high school. That was because they only had so many years to "make it" and have families, then 15-20 years while they continued to work.

Then retirement, often mandatory, at 55ish -- an age when average health was beginning to decline and some had already died. Once retired, men were "past it." It being everything except mowing, golf, watching sports, a little travel, for some being active in civic clubs. Women of course had been past it for the last 25 years or so and had already become increasingly invisible.

Now, in some real senses life begins at retirement, and no surprise that studies say this begins the happiest stage of life.

BOOM!

Yup, the 70-somethings are leading the pack. Does it bother me? Not in the least because this is not an ordinary election.

I've said before: team up Biden with a young, charismatic VP (preferably female) and we'll have a ticket to slay Trump and pass on the torch to the next generation of Democratic leaders. Right now we need a POTUS to repair the damage done to our agencies, institutions, relationships with our allies while clearly warning our adversaries: We're back in town. Party-time is over.

Dammit this is not an age-ism matter although I'm 60 on the progressive side of moderate voter myself. This is about capturing the youth vote who simply aren't energized by sleepy Joe unless he displays more truly progressive plans like Bernie. Do I hear "another Washington establishment candidate" from youth-- big whoop. Yes. Every youth I discuss this with. I've also heard youth who could get behind Liz, or Kamala or Andrew Yang but Joe. This ex-DA is sharp as a razor and will cut the orange boob to thin slices for all to see.
Frankly, any other choice and we might as well call it for Trump right now. Republicans and the majority of the rich and powerful in this country and elsewhere are ensuring that happens in a dozen different ways. One gaffe, and it's over, we're stuck in this sewer.
Our only way out is to put up a truly progressive platform that fights for a chance for youth, or they'll just sit this one out again, thank you.
Standard disclaimer before some prosecutorial scrooge starts in on me again: Yes I'll be voting for whoever the nominee. Yet I believe mine and yours will be wasted unless we have one sharp and no-holds barred cookie. Thats Mrs Harris.

21. This accusation of ageism is frustrating
Mon Aug 12, 2019, 04:57 PM
Aug 2019

I would prefer my candidate be younger.

Before you call my position ageism, answer this question.

Would you support someone who is 85? Maybe 95? Maybe 100? Maybe 110?

If you identified a number, then you have an "ageist" attitude as well. Your cutoff is just different than mine.

My reason is simple, I would like a candidate that will have a good statistical chance of being in good mental and physical shape for 10 years. That gets them through an election and two terms. The chance of that go down significantly as you get older. Don't listen to me, ask the actuarial people.

Having said that, I would vote for anyone in the field that still has a pulse over Trump. Come to think of it..the pulse is preferred but not mandatory.

Mon Aug 12, 2019, 05:22 PM

Well at least according to Roman historians. The word for senate is senatus and the word for old age is senex, with a few related words having similar forms. And don't forget that Native Americans followed the counsel of their elders. So, having older leaders is not a new concept.

Tue Aug 13, 2019, 11:03 AM

The evidence shows WITHOUT A DOUBT that a 77 year old is less likely to stay healthy and sharp over the next 10 years than someone who is younger.

Try to buy term life insurance or long term care insurance at that age. It will be exponentially more expensive (if available at all). Actuarial science doesn't care about bias. They are looking at the cold hard statistics.

There are real reasons to want someone younger. It isn't about what they are like at this age. It is about the probability of whether they can stay healthy and sharp through two terms.

Tue Aug 13, 2019, 11:45 AM

When he passed 80, he became forgetful , unsteady and frail.

We could do this all day. Individual stories aren't evidence.

You could be right and they all might be sharp and healthy 10 years from now. Just know that it would be a statistical anomaly if it happened. Likewise, Harris and others her age could have a health issue or early onset Alzheimers. That too would be a statistical anomaly.

I prefer to play the odds. Call it what you will. You can bet the long shot if you want.

I am 64 and each year it gets harder to muster the energy needed to teach science to a new crew of high school students in the fall. Tough as teaching is, it pales in comparison to being the leader of the free world!

I would prefer a president younger than 60 or 65, and I don't think that is ageist. It's realistic; it's weighing the odds. People who are crying ageism are simply trying to defend their favorite candidate. If they were hiring a laborer for their construction firm, they would clearly pass over the 70-year-olds, just like everybody else.

It's not going to be a top factor when I go to vote in the primary, however. I don't care if our candidate is in a coma; I want her or him voted into office and Trump out.

is that we will all age. I see several elder DUers wax the most vociferous about candidates’ age,
especially Biden’s, promoting terrible stereotypes.

Having three top-tier older candidates gives us a great opportunity to address ageism, which does such damage to so many folks. Dehumanizing, writing-off, discarding seniors leaves them a segregated and often depressed population. If ageism is bad enough for mentally and physically healthy folks, it’s hell on those more vulnerable to it for experiencing illness.

Bernie, Warren, Biden all show us that aging itself is not a disease, need not put us on the side-lines, and can be, ironically a gift. What ever happens in the race, these three have a bright and productive future ahead. They will continue to inspire us, fight for us, teach us.

They energize me.
