Sanders adviser criticizes press for 'writing off' campaign

(snip)

Weaver said that during Sanders’ first campaign for president, in the fall and summer of 2015, the independent senator received a “Bernie blackout” from the media, and that during this election cycle, it is the “Bernie write-off.”

“There seems to be a direct correlation between media coverage of polls and Bernie Sanders’ specific standing in those polls,” Weaver said. “The better the number is in the poll, the less coverage it receives, and the worse he does, the more it receives.”

“That’s on top of headline after headline, in various media, declaring the Sanders campaign over. CNN’s headline ‘Bernie 2020 in big trouble,’ ‘Iowa is no longer feeling the Bern.’ The Washington Post, I mean, you know, it’s legion there, so,” he added.

Weaver underscored that the reason the campaign had scheduled the press call was to dispel the narrative that Sanders was doing badly and show that, since the last debate on July 30, Sanders has solidified his second-place position in the polls, trailing only former Vice President Joe Biden.

He was a guest on the All In show with Chris Hayes on a regular basis in 2015 and 2016 and the coverage of his campaign was far more favorable than the other candidates that ran in 2016 in both parties.

The media also responds to almost every comment made by Bernie and his campaign staff during this cycle. Look! Even this press release from Weaver is getting attention. We rarely see any attention given to campaign staffers in the other campaigns.

If Bernie is getting a media blackout or is being written off, it is that message does not resonate with voters who view his policies and positions as unworkable. Add in the fact that there are also 20 other candidates in the race and I would say that he is getting a fair amount of media coverage--some of it is positive while some of it is negative. His campaign staff and his supporters will nave to cope with that reality.

Weaver also has his self-interest in mind. He doesn't get paid after Bernie is eliminated from the race so he will urge Bernie to stay in the race until the convention so that he gets a paycheck even if it is mathematically impossible for Bernie to clinch the nomination.

Perhaps, Bernie can breakdance along with the soundtrack? That would get Bernie some media attention and make Jeff Weaver happy.

I was at his soapbox speech yesterday. The Des Moines register said he was the biggest draw of all the candidates. The NPR report only covered Warren and Biden. No mention of Sanders.
I agree this election cycle is giving him more attention, but they don't miss a chance to ignore him.

has been a proven tactic among his base, exactly the same as Trump's evil-Democrats tactics with his, and they're both at it every day to keep them stirred up.

It's working, as always. I paid a rare visit to that hostile little spinoff forum from DU earlier, and victimization of Sanders (and them) by giant evil Democratic party forces is the explanation for everything Sanders. Not that he has huge competition most people like better this time, that the press, Repubs and Russia don't need to use him against Hillary this time, or people know a lot more about him and his role in the 2016 tragedy this time.

But it was a genuinely informative visit in one respect. It turns out the Democratic Party controls MSNBC (I didn't know that!), which is busily hiding the reality that Sanders is (again) far and away the real choice of the people.

and media, have the power of Wall St. and corporations and Big Pharma and billionaires and lobbyists and wealthy donors financing them, made America deindustrialize with trade deals and put everyone in jail: why didn't they bother to rig the general election? Suddenly their massive diabolical power ran out? You can't say that Democrats will stop at nothing to prevent progressive policies and then claim that they didn't stop at nothing to rig the general election in order to carry out their evil plan.

answers. Back in 2015 I started noticing that both RW trumpsters and these people were mostly going silent whenever unexpected things happened. They didn't know what they were supposed to say yet. So everyone else would be discussing it alone, then after a period they'd be back passionately pushing whatever (always oppositional) drivel they'd been supplied by their handlers.

This, of course, is just kicking one of their old, old conspiracies down the road. They shouldn't need help with that but are getting it anyway.

“The better the number is in the poll, the less coverage it receives, and the worse he does, the more it receives.”

Unfortunately, the author never supports his premise with any data or evidence, he simply states it as a given-- which is irrational; but I can certainly empathize with his keen desire to blame Sanders' less-than-stellar performance to date on everything and everyone other than Sanders himself.
