Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumNo, Houston Chronicle, Beto shouldn't quit so he can run for Senate; This is why
The Houston Chronicle editorial board caused a nationwide stir recommending that Beto O'Rourke give up on running for president and run instead for U.S. Senate. It's not a new suggestion, or exclusive to the Chronicle for O'Rourke or for Texas' other Democratic candidate for president, Julian Castro.
On Thursday, O'Rourke said no, absolutely not,he's still running for president, thank you.
But what do y'all think?
Would challenging the incumbent senator, Republican John Cornyn, be better for O'Rourke? For Castro? For Democrats? For Texas? For the nation?
WHY IT GOES BEYOND DEMOCRATS
Republicans' interest in this should be sky high, not just for how it could affect Cornyn's chances. The impact goes beyond the partisan outcome. Whether O'Rourke, or Castro, should bow out of the presidential race and run for Senate is a question that all Texans should find at least a little bit insulting, and here's why:

Beto is a quality Presidential candidate. He has no chance of winning the primary but his campaign is serious and he is qualified for the position in every way. He is also a great spokesperson for us on the national level.
If he ran for the Senate it could be huge. No one is going to say he wouldn't have the best shot to take down Cornyn. Beto has a great following in Texas, has the ability to raise funds nationally for a State campaign, and already understand the full infrastructure that he needs in place. The popularity of Beto could help in a lot of races, not just his own. That includes the Presidential race.
Doesn't really matter at this point. Beto has spoken and it's his decision to make.

(29,674 posts)But with a presidential race that is over saturated I do believe he would make a bigger splash in a Senate race. If we win back the WH in 2020 we will still need the Senate. Someone with his star power could hold major clout if they came in with that seat.
There are a few presidential candidates that I personally hope will consider dropping and running for a Senate seat. They could make a big difference in the Senate make up.
