Former Rep. Beto Rourke said Sunday that the mass shooting in his home town of El Paso was a "consequence and cost" of President Donald Trump.
It wasn't until that moment that I truly understood how critical this moment is and the real consequence and cost of Donald Trump, ORourke said on NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday.
There is a concerted, organized attack against immigrants, against people of color, against those who do not look like or pray like or love like the majority in this country, ORourke added, also referencing the recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in Mississippi that ensnared nearly 700 undocumented workers. And this moment will define us one way or another. And if we do not wake up to it, I am convinced that we'll lose America, this country, in our sleep. And we cannot allow that to happen.
Although the El Paso gunman said he was not influenced by Trump, his writings reflect the presidents claims of a so-called invasion of the United States.
ORourke echoed the call by many Democrats to ban assault-style weapons, including the semiautomatic version of an AK-47 used in the El Paso shooting. ORourke called it a weapon of war
that no American should own, unless they are on a battlefield, engaged with the enemy.

(43,192 posts)and that is important. People must be reminded of this every week, and it is difficult for a nominee to do that because there are a lot of things to address in a campaign. In that sense, Beto is as useful on the ticket as off the ticket.

I realize this shooting happened in his hometown and suddenly got his interest. Where was he with Sandy Hook? New Town?

(185 posts)when Republicans blocked C-SPAN from airing the Democratic sit in as they tried to force a vote on gun legislation, Beto and Scott peters used social media to live stream the sit in. A couple days before the El Paso tragedy, Giffords and March for Our Lives sent out an invitation to attend their presidential forum on gun safety-- and Beto was the first candidate to accept and this was before the tragedy. At his events, in ruby red counties in Texas, he always spoke out forcefully for gun control. This is not a new issue for him
