Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumSusan Sarandon Puts HARD Hit on Elizabeth Warren at Bernie Sanders Rally
The Bernie Sanders campaign once again goes scorched earth by attacking Elizabeth Warren, since she has not always been a Democrat. Really? Bernie Sanders who changes parties more often the some people change socks is attacking Warren? Also, relying on Green Partier Susan Sarandon to tell Democrats about party loyalty?
The only thing Bernie Sanders is really good at is doing a scorched earth campaign against actual Democrats.
https://www.mediaite.com/news/watch-susan-sarandon-puts-hard-hit-on-elizabeth-warren-at-bernie-sanders-rally/
Actress and activist Susan Sarandon took the gloves off at a Bernie Sanders rally by attacking Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren in one of the worst ways imaginable for a Democratic candidate, dredging up a little-discussed skeleton in Warrens political closet.
Sarandon spent the 2016 presidential campaign attacking Hillary Clinton, but this time around, shes set her sights on another woman whos running against Sanders. At an ice cream social event in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Sarandon introduced Sanders with an ode to his political consistency.
Im heartened by the fact that so many people are on the ground knocking on doors and helping to give information that the mainstream media either is suppressing or corrupting or misrepresenting, Sarandon said. Its so, so important, because when people know and when they hear the senators policies, when they see his track record, when they know how authentic he is and how he has been fighting for these issues for so long, that he is the only one that had that reputation.
He is not someone who used to be a Republican, he is not someone who used to take money, or still thinks money, from Wall Street, he is the real deal, Sarandon added.

(17,390 posts)Bernie repeatedly switches parties by running in the Vermont Senate Democratic party, then declining the nomination. For all of Bernie's talk about running a campaign based on the issues, his campaign's main strength is character assassinations of Democrats.

Bernie Sanders' fans can't be allowed to poison another Democratic primary with personal attacks
Bernie supporters have made questionable claims about contributions to O'Rourke from the oil and gas industry, as well as his support for certain Republican-sponsored House bills but neglect to mention that the oil and gas money came mostly from low-level industry employees (hundreds of thousands of Texans are employed by the industry), and that O'Rourke broke ranks with his party less than the average Democrat.
The real problem for Sanders' supporters seems to be that this "Kennedyesque golden boy," as one has derided O'Rourke, seems perfectly poised to steal Sanders' thunder among millennials and white liberals with his fresh energy and personal charisma. Thus, it's not enough to disagree with O'Rourke; his persona and reputation must be dragged through the mud.
Democrats should greet this early maneuvering by Sanders' supporters with alarm. If Democrats cannot show such tactics which will be used against any non-Sanders candidate, because no one can get to the left of a socialist for what they are, they ignore them at their own peril.
Failing to end this internecine warfare will mean that all members of the Democratic Party running for its presidential nomination will face months of minuscule ideological litmus tests turned into character assassinations. The narrative, driven by the far left and lapped up by the press, will likely result in a nomination fight that could well devolve into the kind of pointless factionalism that will only help Republicans.

(30,755 posts)They could say that they signed a pledge not to attack other candidates, so they do not wish to comment on anything Sanders or his supporters, or his staff, have to say. They could point out their own positions and records. They could say they will not take part in any circular firing squads.
If they all take this position, Sanders would be frozen out. He is not going to win the nomination anyway.
Ignore all accusations when the press mentions them. Ignore them and laugh at the same time. All politicians know how to smile and laugh on cue.

(34,183 posts)Im fine with Warrens past and Im fine with Bernies convenient party affiliation. Both are great for the party.
I might not even be a Democrat anymore if it werent for Bernie Sanders.
Id never vote for a Republican, but I wasnt happy either.

Happy to say, my mom saw the light when she voted for Clinton, and she adored President Obama. At 97, she cannot quite bring herself to identify as a Democrat, and calls herself an independent, but she definitely votes blue these days.

(4,558 posts)Slightly different circumstances. I hade the GREAT privilege of being raised by 2 wonderful flower-power hippies. But, I was also raised in a rural part of Louisiana with strong conservative roots. For me, being anti-progressive/liberal during that period was the result of rebelling against my parents, peer-pressure, trying to fit in, and self loathing of myself for the homosexual feelings that I had, yet kept extremely closely guarded.. to the point of refusing to even acknowledge it myself. Luckily, I grew out of it through the support and love of my parents and getting away from that toxic area by joining the Navy and slowly learning to love myself and others.
The 18 year old me was a hateful, homophobic, and sometimes even sadistic asshole who vehemently supported Republicans.

(4,950 posts)And from then on was a Democrat. But one could hardly blame her. She was an immigrant (from Germany- as were her parents) and she liked Ike.
It is laughable actually for candidates to start pointing fingers about this- esp. those over 50. Consider that there was a very large number of Democrats that voted for Reagan. And who did Bernie vote for before he turned 40? No one. Did he even have a party membership? He did not see the value of voting until he himself needed votes.
I think it is really silly that his surrogates throw darts at candidates like Warren. They should be pointing out the damage Republicans are doing not splitting hairs among themselves. I think these tactics are off-putting. Bernie already has enough charisma challenges, adding divisiveness like this makes his campaign less attractive.

(17,390 posts)Remember how Bernie was hit with a labor charge from one of his campaign staffers?
Former Bernie Sanders staffer files charge alleging retaliation for union activities
https://www.cnbc.com/2019/07/25/former-bernie-sanders-staffer-alleges-retaliation-for-union-activities.html
Well, in order to deflect, a Bernie supporter files a claim against Elizabeth Warren. Again, Bernie is doing the scorched earth act against Democratic candidates.
https://news.bloomberglaw.com/daily-labor-report/warren-campaign-faces-unfair-labor-charge-by-sanders-supporter
Sen. Elizabeth Warrens 2020 presidential campaign is facing an unfair labor practice charge alleging its confidentiality agreement with staffers unlawfully prevents them from speaking out on workplace issues.
The Aug. 13 challenge to the campaigns non-disparagement clause was filed by Jason Legg, a tenants rights attorney in Denver, Colo., who supports Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) for the Democratic nomination. The National Labor Relations Board accepts charges even if the filer isnt an employee of the organization alleged to be violating federal labor laws.
* * *
Legg told Bloomberg Law that he hopes his charge spurs changes in the Warren campaigns employment practices. He is targeting the campaigns reported use of unpaid fellowships, as well as non-disparagement agreements that Legg says could stifle staffers labor rights.
I cant say Im not at all politically motivated, Im a Sanders supporter and Warrens my second choice, so I guess this is one way to show the contrast, Legg said. The reported fellowship program is not consistent with everything else Warren says she believes and fights for so I hope people think about the substance of the charge rather than my interest in supporting a different candidate, he said.

(101,355 posts)is maybe 10%? She's a fringe figure, what with her clowning around 4 years ago. She drags Sanders to the left, but probably turns away more Democrats than persuades anyone to the left of the party to get back in the primaries.
If I were Bernie, I'd get her to shut up and just give money. She's a reminder of why you can be too far left for practical politics.

(16,439 posts)Bernie is not only not going to be the nominee, he will almost certainly be off his 2016 pace when the votes and delegates get counted. After believing he was a virtual lock for the nomination, That anger, that frustration and that rage must have somewhere to go. My bet is it will go to vicious attacks on the actual Dems in the race. Right now its just the surrogates that are in attack mode but that will change. This still has the potential to be a very messy primary.
