KEOKUK, Iowa Diana Martinez, 70, looked at Beto ORourke, 46, and made her choice: It was time for Generation X to fix this country.
Doesnt he remind you of Kennedy? Ms. Martinez said as Mr. ORourke offered firm handshakes and music recommendations to a coffeehouse crowd. Hes young. Thats what its going to take to try and beat Trump.
Some closer to Mr. ORourkes age were less convinced. Standing near the back, Erin Cruz, 41, sized up Mr. ORourke and then praised the septuagenarian socialist senator, Bernie Sanders.
Im looking for someone to be as progressive as Bernie, Ms. Cruz said, tugging on a Red Hot Chili Peppers shirt.
Actually, she amended, perhaps just Bernie himself.

(41,832 posts)I can't think of any other profession where 48 is considered too young.
Forty-eight is middle-aged, not a youngster.

(9,269 posts)We saw what happened the last time we had an elderly president. And if we want to WIN it will help to have someone looking healthy and energetic next to our opponent. Just my .02

(58,785 posts)convention in 1787. Only some were members of Jefferson's and Madison's Democratic-Republican Party, of course.
In those days before the Medical Revolution, the vast majority were under 50. Just the trip to Philadelphia was too onerous for many distinguished older people in other colonies. Benjamin Franklin was the oldest at 81, 83 when he signed the Constitution, but he was from Philadelphia and didn't have to come from Georgia.
Jefferson wasn't there, but he was about 44 at the time. Madison was 36 and Hamilton 30. Washington, among other big landowners who were the biggest force for revolution to save their holdings from a somewhat hostile monarch, was 55, 58 when he became our first president.
If the convention were held today, more would be in their 80s and even older. Vastly increased average lifespans, especially including being able to maintain longer periods of good health, mean those whose lives make a difference can continue in much larger numbers for much longer.
But throughout our history, large numbers of younger people have been in ours governments. After all, every 2 years new freshmen arrive in our national congress and most of our state legislatures, a constant infusion of new young leaders.

Time for the new generation. Bernie had 30 years.

(42,862 posts)I think anyone vying to become the Leader of the Free world should be strong and healthy, mentally and physically. I'm looking for someone who's energetic and motivating. We need someone with a positive can-do attitude and realistic plans and ideas. I'm looking for someone with practical experience, but who hasn't been around for 30 years or more... and I'll just leave it at that.

(14,768 posts)Look, RBG is 86, has has cancer 3 times, and despite a bad fall with broken ribs, is still showing up to work every day and doing exactly what we need her to do.
Bernie is disqualified for a lot of reasons (imho incompetent, irrelevant, ignorant), but age is only an indication.
As they age, some people lose cognitive abilities. That is important. But it isn't universal.
The real question is has the years allotted a person resulted in experience and accomplishment? Being elected senator over and over with no accomplishments to show for it is neither. If past performance is a measure of future gains, some of the candidates will be a bad choice.
But if you gave me the choice of a 48 y.o. obamma or a 78 y.o. obamma, I'd definitely want the 48 y.o. one.

(14,768 posts)bHe spends more time watching tv than most people with 2 jobs spend working.
How is that a demanding position?
RBG reportedly works 10-12 hours every day. On the other hand, clarence thomas doesn't. ;0
My point isn't that one job is more demanding than the other, it's that you can get away putting whatever effort you want into it.
A younger person with more energy will probably put in a lot more hours, be a lot more involved, and provide a lot more personal oversight to decisions in the various agencies.
But the important point is that experience "can" make shorter work of any particular task. Joe Biden has been there, he won't have a learning curve. He can and would attract staff that would put the teeth in his administration.
Others his age, not so much.
But again, if given the choice of a 48 y.o. Obama ( )or a 78 y.o. Obama, I'd take the 48 y.o. one. But a choice between a 78 y.o. Biden and a 78 y.o Sanders would go hands down to Biden.
I don't know enough about beto yet, though I do like him, harris and warren in addition to biden.
