"This reads like the product of a pretty sophisticated opposition research dump."

Most people here will be able to guess, given the story getting so much attention today, that the quote above is about the Washington Post hit piece written by Biden critic Matt Viser, attacking Biden for conflating a few different stories.

What most people here probably wouldn't be able to guess -- and I was surprised, too -- is that the quote is from Davd Axelrod, who's been critical of Biden quite often himself (way too often IMO), but who didn't like this story.

His Twitter thread starts here:

Not in any way taking anything away from the reporters, who undoubtedly reported it out, but this reads like the product of a pretty sophisticated opposition research dump,

And there will be more, because @JoeBiden is a gaffe and embellishment machine. But if you read to the end of this story, it also reflects something that is a real strength, and that is his empathy.

And I do question as to why you HAVE to read to the bottom to learn that Biden did, indeed, pin a medal on a reluctant hero who lost his buddy. Despite all the conflation and embelllishments, the core of his story was true
.

Emphasis added.

Btw, if this was an oppo research dump, as Axelrod suggests, with the info given to Matt Viser, then the next question is: Who did this, the Trump campaign or a Democratic rival of Biden's?

And as for Biden conflating and embellishing -- as I explained in another post, this is something many people do, because of the way we remember:

This in particular:

And as for Biden conflating and embellishing -- as I explained in another post, this is something many people do, because of the way we remember

Exactly right. No one is carrying a video/audio machine in their head. Our memories are shaped most frequently by the emotions generated by the particular event. There's no doubt that Joe Biden was deeply moved by his interactions with these soldiers. That's his empathy quotient. And as Axelrod points out, Biden did pin a medal on a reluctant hero.

We all have experienced this during family interactions, stories we tell that differ from other relatives. We may have all witnessed the same event, yet our descriptions will differ, sometimes radically so depending on where our focus was at the moment and how it affected us personally. It's why eye-witness accounts are so frequently inaccurate.

This is simply another attempt to stop Biden and bring down his poll numbers. That's what it's all about because Joe Biden is a threat with numbers that--so far--have proved amazingly resilient.

And yes, the real question is where is this coming from? Our own Democratic camp or right-wing smear agents? In this case, I really hope it's the latter.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

yesterday, and he looked very sheepish. It was obvious that this did not turn out the way he had anticipated - being hailed as a journalistic hero for uncovering some "great find" - perhaps even winning the next Pulitzer Prize...

Most of his counterparts, in the industry, are not in solidarity with this man and are, instead, vocally defending Joe. Even Dana Bash, who was hosting CNN's Inside Politics yesterday, adamantly said: "I have been covering Joe Biden for years and this is exactly how he has always been -it has nothing to do with his age - this is just who he is. Anyone who has been following Dana Bash knows that she is a straight shooter and has never shown any affinity toward Joe.

This one backfired...
