Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumJust Don't Do It.
A few years ago, I campaigned in a primary for a candidate who lost, and I was so upset about the winner that I refused to vote for him. I think I voted Green.
And as such, I am determined to sit out the Democratic Presidential Primaries, except to learn about the candidates, especially the winner, so that I have the necessary ammo to fight my ass off in September, October and November 2020.
I don't begrudge anyone the right to support a candidate, to give money to a candidate, to campaign for a candidate. But please, please, please don't sling mud. Don't give ordinary voters the ammunition to hate a candidate who might win the primaries.
It's SO IMPORTANT.
Pump up your candidate, talk up your candidate. Demonstrate that your candidate is electable. Demonstrate that your candidate is progressive, or moderate, whichever, or wherever.
But do not, do not give the ordinary voter reason to go Green in November 2020. Do not give the ordinary voter a reason to stay home in November 2020. Do not give the ordinary voter a reason not to donate in the General Election. Do not give the ordinary voter a reason not to campaign in the General Election.
Just don't do it.
Take the high ground, as Michelle Obama said. Let the Republicans go low. Let them be the party of white extremist murderers. Let them be the party that everyone wants to beat.
But don't go low. Don't convince yourself that if another candidate other than your candidate wins, then the WRONG candidate won, and you can't bring yourself to support them or campaign for them.
Just don't do it.

(115,774 posts)into the sniping, mudslinging and generally dickish behavior that too often characterized the 2016 primaries, both on DU and elsewhere. I've been glad to see most of the candidates so far being good sports about other candidates, showing a "more the merrier" attitude instead of ignoring or disrespecting their rivals. Since many are senators, they will have to be able to get along with the other senator-candidates, so that's certainly part of it. But I believe that they are not the sort of people who will resort to dirty tricks and backstabbing, and I hope their supporters will behave the same way.

(2,275 posts)May I also suggest we stick to calling the entire Republican party "the radicals" and the "totally out to lunch."
All the Dems that have begun campaigning are quite reasonable in contrast. In fact, they are trying to bring back Democracy (for all), and in many ways returning to TRADITIONAL American solutions, like a green variation on FDR's New Deal which boosted the economy for generations. That's a TRADITIONAL Democratic solution and no one should be calling it radical. Just like gay marriage should be seen as a traditional bonding right and not radical in the least.
I tried to spell out this rejection of the term "radical" in my post "How NOT to be a 'propaganda loser' ":

(2,275 posts)This is not a linquistic parlor game either. It is sound. It is rational. And it is right. We don't need to scream about such a demonstrable truth. But we do need to state it succinctly and repeatedly.
One more time, with feeling:
THE REPUBLICANS HAVE BECOME RADICAL AND LAWLESS. THEY ARE DESTROYING THE TRADITIONAL AMERICAN SYSTEM.
Democrats are trying to rebuild FDR's traditional American economy for all and extend it to every race, gender and ethnicity. They are trying to conserve this sacred planet, God's Earth, and pass it on to the next generation unmolested.

(5,811 posts)you for sharing your experience.
My first priority is that we elect a DEMOCRATIC president. I don't have to like the person.
My first choice candidate is Rep Joe Kennedy but he's not running.
If Joe Biden runs, I'll vote for him in the primary.
Jay Inslee is my third choice.

(19,240 posts)Be positive. Support your candidate. Never assume that another candidate called your candidate a poo-head unless you hear that candidate actually say the words (because making up fake criticism of one Dem that appears to come from another Dem is in the Pat Buchanan CREEPY handbook).

(42,862 posts)No calling legitimate criticism "kneecapping". No short-circuting discussions. No accusations of "divide and conquer" for extreme vetting (that we need to do right NOW, by the way... not after the convention, by the GOP.)
No comparing fiercely loyal Democrats to Pat Buchanan because there's a difference of opinion. That's a personal attack. It makes no good sense for anyone to try and "life up" their preferred candidate by attacking and smearing other members here. Why do that?
And while we're at it: No calling the Democratic party "an absolute failure". No calling Democrats "feeble" and "ideologically bankrupt". No calling the Democratic party "the party of the elite" or "the party of the one-percent". No implying that there's "no difference" between the GOP and Democrats. No calling the Democratic party "corrupt". No accusing the Democratic party of "focusing too much" on diversity.

(14,565 posts)As a sports bettor it is awesome to lose only 43-45% of the time. On a Saturday I might lose two or three dozen college basketball bets. On a Sunday I might lose 10 or 15 golf matchup wagers. That's probably why I have no trouble accepting and shifting.
It particularly hurt when Hillary wasn't going to win the primary against Obama in 2008. I always knew she fit that cycle far beyond anything previously or subsequently. I was going nuts that others here didn't grasp that, and the immense lost opportunity. Obama waiting in the wings was light years preferable to Hillary on hold. But transitioning to Obama that fall was no trouble at all.
I have to say I am not confident against an incumbent. I don't care who the names are on either side. Situation always comes first in my way of thinking. Winning in 2020 is going to feel like an amazing gift, if it happens.
