Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumJoe Biden: 'I think almost anybody' in 2020 Democratic field could be the president
For former Vice President Joe Biden, the 2020 presidential campaign has been focused primarily on one question: Who is best to beat President Donald Trump?
His campaign's answer: Joe Biden is.
But, in an interview for a podcast with the Washington Post's Jonathan Capehart, Biden seemed on the verge of undermining his own camp's argument in favor of his electability relative to the rest of the 2020 Democratic primary field.
Capehart, an opinion writer for the Post who is also African American, asked Biden whether he believes that its gonna take an old white person to beat an old white person and old school against old school when discussing the African American community's concern over Trumps re-election.
Biden responded: Theyd be looking for someone who maybe done them as good a chance of beating Trump, but understands the problems and the opportunities that they face.
... when the assertion is made that ... well, the reason the only person that can beat Trump is, an old white guy. I just think that ... I think theres other people in the race who can beat Trump, Biden continued.
Who? Capehart asked.
Well, I think almost anybody, Biden answered. Theyd all make a better president than Trump, no matter whos left in the race.

(5,376 posts)I believe Joe Biden when he says almost any of our 2020 Democratic candidates can beat Trump.
That was very honest and very gracious of him to say that to the press.

(5,376 posts)I think he was being incredibly honest and gracious when he said this to the press:

What's wrong with highlighting what Biden himself said? He was being very courageous and honest to go against his own camp's argument.

(5,376 posts)That part strengthens my argument why Biden deserves credit for being so honest.
So, again, I think it was very honest and gracious for Joe Biden to say that almost all our Democratic candidates would defeat Trump ESPECIALLY since this went against his own camp's arguments.

Kudos to Biden for not going out of his way to trash his rivals to win the nomination.

(32,793 posts)This is thread #2 about this. The other one is full of great positive comments from DUers supporting different candidates about Bidens comments.
Biden is not just about himself. of course hes in it to win, but if hes not the nominee he will work to support all Dems up and down the ballot.
A great positive force for the country

(581 posts)Bernie is an old white person. Older than Joe. African Americans are therefore gravitating to Joe in a larger scale because of something else. Maybe they just like his platform better.

(15,805 posts)a week now. Almost any Dem candidate polls better than Trump. So why do we get all this gleeful grade school pile on when Biden repeats the news andb says our candidates beat Trump?
The corporate press has their fat thumb on the scale, trying to tilt the Dem primary win to another candidate that is better aligned with their boardroom plans. Whoever that might be is still a wildcard, but it's clearly not Biden, and the goal might even be a Republican.
The point being the press should not be in the business of creating or rewriting the news to match their corporate agenda, nor should Dems be carry their water and enabling the wealthy oligarchs to undermine our candidates.
Be wary of these attacks against Biden. There's still an army of Russian trolls running loose in the intertubes and stirring the same pot to keep thier guy Trump in office.

(6,283 posts)There are polls almost daily which show numerous candidates who on a head-to-head basis today could beat Trump. Why would anybody make a big deal out of Joe Biden stating the obvious? It's just.....

(146,329 posts)What he is saying is that there are several good Democratic candidates. He's being a good Democrat in doing so.
That doesn't mean that he thinks anyone is more likely to win than he is. It's just a nice thing to say about his primary opponents.
For pete's sake!

Joe was honest and gracious enough to go against his own's camp's electability argument, and he deserves praise for that.
Even David Axelrod admits this:

(5,445 posts)I do think that Joe Biden's ability to communicate warmth and compassion is as strong as Obama's and Clinton's and he would be able to do much to repair the damage Trump and done to America's collective psyche.
