Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWarren: "What's going to carry us as Democrats is not playing it safe."
...Warren took two questions from the audience before the rain intensified. The first focused on whether she has what it takes to beat President Donald Trump. Warren, who didnt respond with an attack on Trump, said she knows how to fight and win.
I think you have to be willing to get in this fight all the way, but heres another component, at least as I see it. I think whats going to carry us as Democrats is not playing it safe. It is not pretending that everything was just fine and here was this one problem and well get rid of that one problem and its all going to work out, because its not. Its not. We have had problems going back decades now, and they are big structural problems, she said.
When questioned by reporters, Warren was asked if she would ever ignore the so-called non-aggression pact she has with Sen. Bernie Sanders to draw more of a distinction between the two candidates to make it easier for voters to decide.
Bernie and I have been friends for many, many years, long before I ever got into politics, and I dont see any reason that that should change, she said.
She added, Look, I get out every day to try to meet as many voters as I can and talk about why Im in this race, to talk about my vision, to talk about whats working, to talk about my plans to fix it and to talk about how Im building a grassroots movement to get it done. I think thats what voters want to hear.

(13,193 posts)Trump and his followers need to be humiliated by a categorical rejection, a landslide win. And we need to get the Senate if we can. We don't have a single point of support we can afford to give up for any reason. Anything short of a landslide, and our "winner" will have no mandate. No plan will go anywhere.
Trump may or may not leave the Oval Office if he loses by only a couple of points. If he did leave, he would foment rage on Twitter the entire four years of the Dem Presidency.
I like Warren's ideas, but I'll be with Biden until Warren's numbers against Trump are better than Biden's. Biden's ideas are just as good as Warren's (if not better).

(4,341 posts)And sorry, but no, Biden doesn't have a better platform than Warren does, and his ideas are not as good as hers. For one, she is not pretending she can negotiate with republicans, will she try? of course she will, but she won't compromise with them to get loosing results, which if we go by history, Biden will. With Biden we seem to be getting more of the same, better than now, no question, but not progressive enough.
I will vote for Biden if he becomes the nominee, but I believe there are better candidates.

(13,193 posts)It's that simple. No one, Warren or anyone, can talk about how powerfully progressive their plan if they won't have the power to enact it. Votes are power. Plans without power are worse than no plan.

(6,207 posts)It means standing in the middle because we are afraid that liberal policies will cost us votes.
It means not having the courage to call for bold initiatives that are needed to carry this country forward.
It means being apologetic for being a liberal.
It means loosing faith in the inherent goodness of the people of this country.
It means we, as Democrats, are afraid to be who we truly are.

(6,207 posts)What's going on at our southern border is criminal.
And I'm not talking about the refugees, I'm talking about our government policies.
We can maintain our borders without being deliberately cruel.
This is not about open borders, it's about being humane.
Being humane is certainly not foolish.

(191 posts)No thank you. I'm not in the mood for a revolution in this country. I only care about defeating Trump. I'm not interested in losing a chance to defeat Trump in order to run on a bunch of revolutionary policies that may or may not work. 2020 is not the time to be running on wild, untested, experimental, ultra left policies. We need to defeat Trump first.

This is how most Americans feel. We just need to win 2020. It's not hard. Get trump out of office!!

this is not the time for big risks. Not the time for a landslide McGovern type loss. Why isn't that proposed when there are somewhat normal Rs running for a second term, rather than the 2 worse people of all time to occupy the office? Who knows?

(4,558 posts)Go after the root of the problem, a generally ignorant electorate that isn't equipped with critical thinking to parse the bombardment of misinformation and outright bullshit out there.
An electorate armed with critical thinking skills makes the effects of money in politics reduced, they won't be as swayed by "feel good" messages and advertising.
An electorate armed with critical thinking skills will know "how" to search for truth in messages and social media.
An electorate armed with critical thinking skills would be more supportive and demanding of environmental responsibility.
An electorate armed with critical thinking skills would be more supportive of Universal Health Care improvements realizing that it isn't something for "them", but something that benefits "us".
So many of our problems would be solved quite naturally if only the American electorate knew how and would apply critical thinking to the information they are presented with and choices they have.
Hard focus on our education, and adding required high school level critical thinking courses to the curriculum needs to be a TOP priority imo.

(12,712 posts)Sanity can seem crazy.
People have talked about the idea of Democrats getting us back to "normal". I shudder to even think of that because what was normal is now coming to its fruition after a long chain of various causes and conditions. Getting normal is like asking to go back, Jack and do it again. Wheel turning round and round.
We might want to consider breaking out of this repetitive loop of madness, instead and we need more stability to do this.
So, to sum that up we need to achieve a stability, (a platform) from which we can get to some form of consensual sanity in our society and approach to our now critical, systemic, core issues. I don't think we can afford the luxury of any nostalgia and that means leveling up. You can't solve a systems problems from within that system, to paraphrase Einstein) so that suggests a movement towards a meta-system, no matter how vague that seems or how arduous the task.
If we use the criteria of the past and what is considered normal now then more of the same will ensue. Right now, normal is insane and on the verge of a nervous breakdown or a real psychotic break, if you want to use psychological metaphors.
So, yes, it is obvious that there is a big problem with "playing it safe" due to the egregious state of our union in general.
It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.
