(6,414 posts)It was reasonable to think the proposal might be problematic, but I think hes been very skilled in handling it and has changed minds. Good for him and good for everyone.

(25,183 posts)You are not going to get essentially half of Texas going for mandatory buybacks, at least not if your polling is accurate.
Maybe when Beto has to fold up his tent and go home, he can spend his time working on the Texas Legislature to have a mandatory buyback program there. If it can be done in Texas, then there's a chance in hell that it can be done nationally.

(2,753 posts)we're not got to get much of anything done.
Sure Beto might not win, but whoever does would be wise to put him on the ticket for Texas's 38 electoral votes alone, and this poll shows Beto as the most electable there.

(25,183 posts)then she might put him on the ticket. Maybe.
If anyone else wins the nomination, then Beto strikes out on either race or gender.
And, if I never ever expected him to win the nomination, my attitude is not "defeatist". It's realistic.

(185 posts)Maybe you should rethink your assumptions
In addition to the polls mentioned above, here is the one from ABC https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/10-fear-mass-shooting-gun-laws-poll/story?id=65414785 showing 52% national support.
Beto has been leading on this issue, reframing the conversation instead of letting the NRA do it. And either he was attuned to public opinion without the polls or he's been successfully shaping public opinion.
With regard to Texas and nationally, a key swing demographic is suburban moms. They are very open to Beto's position. Better political positioning than trying to appease weapons of war proponents

(25,183 posts)if mandatory buybacks are for real, then get them enacted in the states. Bonus points if it happens in a red state.
