Congratulations to our presumptive Democratic nominee, Joe Biden!
Columbia Journalism Review: The New Yorker's Adam Entous on reporting out Biden allegations
https://www.cjr.org/q_and_a/new-yorker-hunter-biden-ukraine.phpThis is an interesting read.
But the details Entous goes into show the difference between his real investigative reporting and the skewed "reporting" done by Peter Schweizer:
Entous: The accusations mainly began with a conservative researcher named Peter Schweizer, who was the author of Clinton Cash. He had come out with a book in early 2018 that went into what he termed corruption by proxy. The idea was that foreign governments that want influence with politicians in the United States would sometimes throw business in the direction of their siblings or family members to try to curry favor with them. Earlier this year, it started to get a little bit more traction with a new twist in the allegations, which was that Joe Biden, when he was vice president, [pushed for Ukraine to dismiss] a prosecutor named Shokin, who was, according to the accusation, investigating Burisma at the time.
And so my assignment was, basically: get to the bottom of it. Is there any there there? I gradually decided, You know what, Im just going to reach out to Hunter. And so I sent him an email, and a little bit to my surprise, he said that hed be willing to talk with me, walk me through everything. And so the story, which began as a get to the bottom of these allegations swirling in the mainly conservative press, became something else. It became much more of a personal account about his struggles, not only in business, but also with drugs and alcohol.
-snip-
So when he took this job, he didnt talk to his father in advance. He told me that was part of a long-standing arrangement that he and his siblings had, where they wouldnt talk to [their father] about these activities. I can understand the criticism of Hunters decision to take this position on this board at a moment when his father was overseeing the policy. When you look at it further, particularly when it comes to some of these allegations in the conservative mediadid they take the argument farther? What they said was that Biden used the power of the vice presidency, in this case that Ukraine had this prosecutor fired. When I looked into that, I found from talking to senior members of the Ukrainian government, talking to senior advisers to Biden, talking to members of the company in questionI found that the allegation, as best I could tell, was not true. That Biden didnt use his office to protect his son.
-snip-
The basic argument is that foreign governmentsthe Chinese government, Ukrainian oligarchsare enriching the kids to influence the parents. Its not a completely crazy concept. I think that it is legit to raise the question, but [Schweizer] should have looked, in my opinion, a little bit further, to see whether in fact there was any adjustment. What hes doing in the book is just raising the question. He brings together what he claims are facts but actually are completely unrelated things. For example, Hunter Bidenaround the same time as hes joining the board at Burismais going to the White House with one of his business partners, Devin Archer. And the idea is that they must have gone there to meet with Joe Biden to discuss [the gas company].
[Schweizer] didnt have much of a chance of actually directly speaking to the principals here. So when I asked them, you know, Hey, what was the deal with that White House visit? Archer put his son on the phone with memaybe he was seven at the time, something like that. His son said he was working on a school project to basically do a model of the White House. When Hunter had heard that, he invited him and cleared him in with the Secret Service to come in there to walk around.
This is something I think a lot of journalists unfortunately tend to do when we dont understand. We see coincidences and we automatically assume that there must be some nefarious intention there. But if you actually poke a little, if you look a little more closely, you often find that its not nefarious. If [Schweizer] had done more human reporting, actually talking to people instead of just looking through calendars and looking at press reports and lining everything up in chronological orderif he had actually talked to people, he wouldve gotten closer to the truth.

Btw, Entous actually contacted the school Archer's son went to and had the story confirmed there.
IMO Entous is being entirely TOO generous to Pete Schweizer here. He seems to be suggesting that Schweizer drew the wrong conclusions simply because he didn't investigate enough. I think it's much more likely Schweizer saw an opportunity to smear the Bidens and, even if he might have heard the truth, would have ignored it.
Schweizer was on Tucker Carlson's show last night and again mentioned Archer going to the White House. Possibly he hadn't heard yet about what Entous had written about it yesterday, but I'd bet any number of people he knew had sent him links to this article since it was partly about him.
Schweizer also said last night that Hunter's interview with Entous had disproven what Joe Biden had said about never discussing Hunter's business dealings with him. In fact, the New Yorker article's description of what Hunter said was their only exchange about it was Joe telling Hunter "I hope you know what you're doing" and Hunter saying he did. Neither Carlson nor Schweizer referred to the actual words Hunter Biden used, just tried to leave the impression it was much more.
Fox News -- Carlson included -- was also making a big deal about having found a 2014 photo of Joe Biden golfing with Hunter and with Devon Archer. And Schweizer also treated that photo as proof of corruption.
In the main Fox News story on the article, Archer is identified ONLY as a "Ukraine gas company executive."
Not a word about him having been Hunter Biden's partner in an investment firm for years before either of them were on the board at Burisma. Or about Archer having been a fundraiser for the Democratic Party and probably a friend of Hunter's for years before that.
Instead, Fox wanted their viewers to focus ONLY on Archer's links to Ukaine and Burisma. Their main story left the impression Hunter Biden would have been introducing a Ukrainian gas company exec to his father.
And look! He was golfing with Joe Biden! And he had ties to Ukraine! That must mean corruption!
It was a disgusting display of fake news, pro-Trump propaganda.
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
