(3,631 posts)It's possible to get to a blockage before it does any damage to the heart muscle. If there had been any permanent damage they would have said that he had a heart attack which was stopped by the stents. And when you're on the bench in the cath lab, they can tell whether there's any damage to the heart with great precision; it's one of the things they are very interested in. Sounds like Bernie was attentive to his symptoms and got treatment in time.

(7,277 posts)The medical meaning of the term is crystal clear.
Myocardial infarction (MI) (ie, heart attack) is the irreversible death (necrosis) of heart muscle secondary to prolonged lack of oxygen supply (ischemia)

(3,631 posts)My father had one of the earliest experimental stents put in when he got sudden angina in the 1990's. At the time he had two doctors, one of whom said he hadn't had a heart attack and the other who said he had. At issue was whether a small area of heart muscle was "moving" or not on the cath lab image. In any case with the blockage cleared he was visibly much healthier after the procedure than he had been for years before.

(3,631 posts)They said he was admitted because he was diagnosed with a myocardial infarction. That was BEFORE he was cathed. I had my own stent put in five years ago, and my doctor was certain I had had heart damage because I almost had a stroke on the treadmill. (Unlike Bernie, I have silent ischemia -- no symptoms -- which is not a good thing.) In the lab they found no damage at all and my followup included the sentence, "we found your heart in much better condition than we expected."
So that is a thing, and as with my father he might technically have minor damage which technically qualifies as an infarction while the net result of the procedure will be an improvement in his health because it's a minor insult and the remaining tissue has a much better blood supply now.
So the thing you are insinuating, that there is a permanent reduction in his health and capability, is not at all supported by what we know so far.
I also had to stay in the hospital for my stent, not because of any real problem but because they ran out the safe limit for contrast dye while I was on the table and had to do a second procedure the next day to find the real problem.
So we don't know anything. Take it from someone who has been there personally.

(650 posts)Two years ago I had a STEMI ... myocardial infarction with ST elevation. I had 99% blockage of my LAD. Very slight symptoms ... I had a two mile run the day before and just felt 'not right', with some discomfort in my upper back. This was in July. Back to normal life after 2 days in the hospital following the stent procedure. I did the full course of rehab and ran a 2-mile fun run in January equalling my best (geezer) time. Follow up showed NO damage to my heart muscle. Most recent echocardiogram and EKG look like I have never had a heart attack. I am now in the best shape ever at 75.
BTW, I was getting that 'you'll never be 100%' BS from one of the nurses in rehab, as I was burning up their treadmill. I realize I was luckier than most. I just wanted to address your statement.
Take care.

(650 posts)... and Bernie looked markedly better in that photo of his exit from the hospital. That was my experience, and the experience of my best friend, who had the same blockage (but - just barely - escaped having an actual MI). Looking forward to Bernie's next public appearance. Crowd response should be a lot of fun, and Bernie should be fired up.

Sanders will probably take longer to get back to normal as a result, maybe rest until the debate on Oct 12, then some more rest or at least much lighter schedule for a while.
