When you choose a candidate, don't forget that you aren't ONLY choosing him or her --

Last edited Sat Oct 5, 2019, 04:33 PM - Edit history (3)

you are choosing whoever that person might decide to pick as his or her VP.

In the case of someone who statistically speaking has a good chance of dying in office, the importance of having an excellent VP pick is that much more critical than it already is.

Before you pick a candidate, look who they've surrounded themselves with. Look at their other personnel choices. Look at their campaign managers. Look at their former campaign managers. Look who's backing them. Do you trust a Presidential candidate's judgment enough to trust whoever they might pick as VP? Even if they have exercised not-so-great judgment in personnel decisions in the past? Have even hired, for example, an ex-partner of Paul Manafort?

If you are choosing a particular candidate because he or she has the only policies you can get behind, and you won't accept anything else, how will you feel if that person chooses a much more conservative VP to "balance" the ticket -- and then your preferred candidate dies?

When we vote we need to remember: if the person we choose dies or otherwise leaves office, this VP X is who we're all going to be stuck with. So an awful lot is riding on our candidate's health and good judgment.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

telling us what to say, what not to say, what to think, what not to think, who is going to win, who isn’t going to win, who can beat trump, who can’t beat trump!

Nobody here knows anymore than anyone else what is going to happen in the 2020 election.

Nobody here has a right to tell anyone else what they can or can’t say. (Of course I am excluding DU rules here)

It starts with “can we ....:...............”. All agree, stop saying, understand that. Polls show. Etc.

Everyone needs to think about this: has your candidate shown good judgment in personnel decisions in the past?

Is this person likely to choose a VP who will increase or decrease the ticket's chances in the general? What evidence do you have for that?

Before you pick a candidate, look who they've surrounded themselves with.
Excellent advice. It certainly reveals a lot about someone who chooses to surround themselves with Stein-supporters/Stein-voters. Personally speaking, that's something that I find to be both alarming AND insulting.

Look at their other personnel choices. Look who's backing them. Do you trust this person's judgment enough to trust whoever they might pick as VP?
This is the type of common-sense approach that I wish more people would engage in. It's always better to look deeper than just the pretty words and promises.

Sat Oct 5, 2019, 04:23 PM
Oct 2019

we are choosing the person who -- all on his or her own -- will decide on the VP. So it's nuts to say let's just wait till the nominee is already picked. We won't have any choice on the VP who is selected post-primaries. Only on the Presidential nominee right now.

Do we trust that person to make that decision? Do they have a record of making good personnel choices?

Or have they hired, for example, lobbyists who worked closely with Paul Manafort?

That is something we can check.

Our VP choice will be critical.

And in the real world, WE choose the person who will be picking the VP candidate, and we better choose someone we can trust to do that job well.
