Beto O'Rourke looks past early primary states with Arizona rally

PHOENIX (AP) – Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke took his calls for tough gun laws and inclusive immigration policies to Arizona on Sunday, looking well beyond the early primary states as he campaigned in a conservative but changing region.

Looking to break through a crowded field of Democrats, O’Rourke laid out a progressive vision of a country that grants citizenship to young immigrants known as “Dreamers” and treats all immigrants with respect.

“We’re going to rewrite this country’s immigration laws in our own image,” O’Rourke told an enthusiastic crowd of supporters a hip collection of bars and restaurants made of shipping containers in downtown Phoenix.

Immigration is a potent issue for Arizona Democrats, particularly among Latino activists who were drawn to politics by their opposition to former Phoenix-area sheriff Joe Arpaio, who’s immigration crackdowns led to a racial profiling verdict against his office. Arpaio’s criminal contempt of court conviction for violating that verdict was erased by a 2017 pardon from President Donald Trump.

Beto doing slightly better than Biden. Sanders and Warren trail Trump by 2-3 points, within the MOE, and Buttigieg and Harris about 8-9 points back, outside the MOE.

Some other tidbits from the poll: Trump's approval rating is below 40% (39.6), Cornyn's approval rating is slightly underwater with a large number of undecideds (33 approve, 34.9 disapprove, 32.1 unsure), and, most encouragingly, the state seems to be moving leftward on the issue of guns. Over 61% support or strongly support a nationwide ban on high ammunition clips (<22% oppose), nearly the same amount support a national ban on assault weapons, and by a 49.1 to 28.5% margin support a mandatory buyback program of assault weapons. That's probably why Beto's poll numbers haven't sunk in the state like many thought they would after he forcefully pushed back on guns.

If you haven't shown some strength in the first four, you might as well drop out.

It's not like Giuliani was a native son of Florida.

Beto still has a decent chance of taking delegates in Texas. It's doubtful that Booker, Buttigieg, or Klobuchar will receive any delegates even after Super Tuesday. It's also looking like Harris may not win any delegates through Super Tuesday.

With Bernie's health scare I believe that the three candidates currently ahead in the polls may see a slip due to their age.

Beto will be seen as. “Favorite son” in TX; he won’t be showing any path to enough delegates to matter.

If none of the candidates win a majority of the delegates, then taking a small number of delegates might influence the party platform or lead to a VP nomination since it would certainly put Texas into play for the general election. For those reasons it could matter. It's far too early to tell since Bernie's heart attack may make voters reassess whether the party should nominate any of the three older candidates currently leading the polls.

primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
