Sanders heart attack casts cloud over his candidacy

(The article was co-written by this DU poster's daughter)

Aides are laboring to contain the fallout and say the 78-year-old will show his vitality at next week's debate and on the trail.

Bernie Sanders has been sidelined for nearly a week — after failing for almost three days to disclose that he had a heart attack. It's unclear when the 78-year-old senator will return to the stump. His campaign has yet to divulge the severity of his heart attack.

And that sequence of events unfolded as he's been eclipsed in the polls by the other progressive icon in the race, Elizabeth Warren.

Now Sanders and his campaign are laboring to contain the cloud of uncertainty that's formed over his candidacy. According to interviews with Sanders’ aides and surrogates, they’re betting that his performance at next week's debate and on the campaign trail will show he still has the stamina to run for and serve as president.

Sanders' staffers also plan to emphasize how his health scare demonstrates the need for Medicare for All.

From everything I have read, she is 100% Sanders. I have read what Joe shares of his daughters posts and for the most part I 100% disagree with Holly. When I do I just move along and do not comment. I am not a Sanders person and frankly I appreciate her candid comments here. She is being honest. If you read the whole article you would see Briahna Joy Gray, Bernie Sanders’ national press secretary comments:

Not one person with this hysterical take can articulate a legitimate risk that three days of privacy (followed by disclosure) over a year before an election presented to the republic.

Fact is, when you run for the office of President of the United States...there are no three days of privacy only transparency.

That is my take.

Please don't get me wrong, they were often just more lighthearted pieces and she often came at her story from a different angle than others. More like opinion pieces dashed with a bit of journalism. A lot of them were really good reads.

Overall she seems to be a "fan" of Sanders. Her piece on the old videos of Sanders was pretty good.

I had a stent inserted into a coronary artery earlier this year. I'm in very good health otherwise and I'm 20 years younger than Senator Sanders. My doctors restricted my activities for a month before I was allowed to resume light exercise.

Resuming a stressful presidential campaign following a heart attack seems risky. It also demonstrates poor judgment.

Any doctors out there who can provide more insight?

I was back to my normal level of activity (actually - a much higher level, since I wasn't getting out of breath anymore) within a week and haven't slowed down any since. Had the heart attack late on a Thursday night, they did the angiogram on Saturday, and had to stay in the hospital an extra couple of days because one of the blockages needed a special stent that wouldn't be available until Monday. Had the two stents put in on Monday, walked out of the hospital on Tuesday morning, and did my normal Thursday afternoon volunteer gig where I am on my feet for 4 hours two days later. Had more energy than I had for the prior several weeks.

Did 6 weeks of cardiac rehab about a month and a half later. Class could have run anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks (twice a week), and I was doing well enough that the nurses and therapists felt the 6 was fine. At the followup with the cardiologist at the 3 month mark he told me we should just go head skip the next one (which would normally be 6 months later) and just come back in a year for a checkup.

Have had zero symptoms of any problems (but always have the little bottle of nitroglycerin in my pocket - just in case.)

Bernie has always been active and should come through this fine.

(Today I changed my primary preference from Undecided to Sanders. If he does decide to drop out I'll probably switch it to Buttigieg.)

and a heart attack is a grave problem for Sanders. (And turns spotlights on Biden's and Warren's ages also.)

Stopbush may have overstated a bit. As in 2016, Sanders was "done" as far as the nomination went before he announced; it just took time to work through because of heavy Republican, Russian and RW MSM support.

But this heart attack won't kill his candidacy itself, and money will keep it alive. Even as the numbers of his supporters drop, big money arriving through social media fundraising is coming in. So he'll be able to be his wired-in oppositional self right up to the convention. And it's very possible that all that money pouring in will at least secure him the base 300 delegates he needs to put his name into nomination, though most of us do certainly hope it fails to do its job.

He can’t hide his age on TV. He has the image of being a grumpy old man. He might be able to try and change the first part of that descriptor but the old man part will only be enhanced after his heart attack. Nothing about Sanders looks young and vital in hi def.

38. Good article, if a bit long with a ridiculous quote
Tue Oct 8, 2019, 08:28 AM
Oct 2019

It's an insightful article with a bit of an acerbic take on the Senator's campaign.

But there is one quote that is so stupid, I had to comment about it.

“It’s one of those things where the cover-up is worse than the crime,” said Andres Ramirez, a Nevada-based Democratic strategist and former vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee’s Hispanic Caucus. “I don’t think anybody would have cared if they said he had a heart attack, got out a few days later, and then everything’s good.”

There are several ridiculous observations in Mr. Ramirez's quote. First, if it had been announced that the Senator had had a heart attack, people would absolutely care! It's utter nonsense to think that "everything's good" if only they had been forthcoming right after he was admitted to the hospital. Just as is happening now, the campaign would have been swamped with questions about the Senator's age and health as well as the future of the campaign. To think otherwise is naive.

Second, Mr. Ramirez begins his quote with a tired and inaccurate cliche. The analogy doesn't follow because there was no "crime" in that there was no requirement to disclose a health concern that was probably very confusing in its earliest hours. Additionally, there hasn't been a cover-up of any kind. Once all of the medical information was clear and consistent, it appears that the Senator's campaign released the facts of his health. Mr. Ramirez's use of the cliche demonstrates a lazy mind.

Lastly, Mr. Ramirez's quote sounds suspiciously like a thinly veiled political attack masquerading as a "concerned" comment. It's sleazy when Democrats smear one another. I hope our party can do better than this in the future.

Throughout the Democratic Party, however, insiders and strategists are openly questioning the effect his heart attack would have on his bid for the White House — and on the primary as a whole. Sanders' team is also coming under fire from some journalists and Democrats for not announcing earlier that he suffered a heart attack. His aides have declined to allow reporters to interview Sanders’ doctors.

Instead, he said, “There seemed to be a refusal or hesitance to say, ‘Bernie Sanders had a heart attack.’ … I think it’s less of an issue about his age and more of an issue of, ‘Hey, Bernie, you’re supposed to be the transparent candidate.’”
