Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumAfter an Early Stumble, Biden has Recovered Impressively From Trump Claims
Biden's first response to Trump dragging his name in the mud was dithering, but I have to say that he has come back strongly against these baseless lies. His WaPo op-ed was nice and pugilistic, and I hope he continues to keep on the front foot.
I still think he left himself open to these smears by not recusing himself from personally negotiating in Ukraine - Chris Heinz severed business ties with Hunter Biden to avoid even the appearance of a conflict of interest - but he has recovered impressively and has shown that he won't back down from the fight.
Early polls showed that Americans thought there was probably some fire to go with the smoke Trump was blowing, but now Trumps request to investigate Biden and his son is seen as distinctly inappropriate - 62 percent to 32 percent. Over 8 in 10 Democrats call the request inappropriate, as do 63 percent of independents.
I still find his policies too tepid in the face of decades of conservatives driving the country hard to the right, but I am much comforted by his new fighting spirit. We need someone who is going to go to the mat for the American people, and Biden has come along way to showing that he is up for a proper brawl. Long may it continue. Go for it, Joe.

(43,173 posts)or Pence, or Paul Ryan, or Kasich. Because there are still those who think the GOP ticket will be new in 2020. Once Senate Republicans have the chance to ditch the baggage that is sinking them, you think they won't make a change?
Paul Ryan recently moved his family to Washington. Puzzling to some.
If Democrats wish to control the outcome, they need to remove Trump-Pence as a pair. Otherwise Pence picks his own VP.

(14,427 posts)We think of Joe as one of us, a good person who isn't perfect. We like him, and we trust him. And Obama chose him for his VP, and that is no small thing.

(8,745 posts)My problems with Biden are matters of policy (which for me is the most important aspect of politics), but not the man. He fully deserves his reputation as a good guy.
Don't think he's the strongest choice for the Party for a number of reasons, but I'd be more than happy to see him boot Trump out. Especially if he keeps up this fighting spirit - we're not going to get to universal health care and a Green New Deal without a fight, let alone battles against corruption and Wall Street deregulation.

As for the obstruction of Congress, expressed in an amateurish, angry letter from the White House counsel refusing to cooperate with congressional oversight and inquiry into impeachment, Biden said, By obstructing justice and refusing to comply with the congressional inquiry, hes already convicted himself. In full view of the world and the American people, Donald Trump has violated his oath of office, betrayed this nation and committed impeachable acts. To preserve our Constitution, our democracy and our basic integrity, he should be impeached.
Biden made a key point, rebutting the nonsensical argument that we should just leave him in office for more than a year to commit more constitutional mayhem. He believes the entire United States government can be corrupted into furthering his personal political needs, Biden explained. He is even willing to hold Congress and congressionally appropriated aid to a foreign nation hostage to his personal political demands. He believes if he does something, its legal. Biden argued that Trump believes there is nothing we can do about it. He believes he can and will get away with anything he does. We all laughed when he said he could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot someone and get away with it. Its no joke. He is shooting holes in the Constitution. We cannot let him get away with it......
Each and every candidate should refuse to entertain questions accusing Biden or his son of wrongdoing. The only acceptable answer is something along these lines: The allegations are false and have been repeatedly debunked. Raising the issue gives into Trumps false equivalence and abuse of objective reality.
Asked if they would allow their own children to engage in business, they should direct the moderators and audience back to the regrettably underexamined corruption stemming from Trumps daughter and son-in-law working in the White House while making millions. For that, the appropriate response is that Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump should be subject to scrutiny for any violations of U.S. law, including the foreign bribery statutes, and held accountable to the full extent of the law.
