1. The people who design for folks with disabilities should walk in our shoes...

I have severe joint and back issues which severely limit my mobility. I can go only very short distances with a cane. I am constantly astounded and even confused by the thinking of some of these designs and locations that are specifically needed for those challenged with mobility issues.

Why are the large disabled bathroom stalls usually located in the far side of the public restroom entrances? Most seem inaccessible with a scooter and even with a wheel chair the maneuvering to get in and out is just ridiculous. I dread having to use public restrooms as I do need the grab bars in the disabled stall. I know it means taking a long painful walk on sometimes slippery floors to get access to a stall that's more comfortable for me.

Why in God's name is my orthopods office in the middle of a 5 story building. I need to park in the lot and even with a wheel chair I need to take an elevator and traverse hundreds of yards just to get into his office. Then I need to walk the maze to get to an exam room. If that's not bad enough, I need to make appointments that revolve around my husbands work schedule as I am not able to get to his office independently once I get out of the car. I am currently looking for a more accessible alternative for joint care...

I am constantly just amazed by how unnecessarily difficult things can be. I am lucky that I can still drive and go short distances. I can't even imagine how folks with greater issues manage. No wonder many of us are involuntarily house bound...Most of the time it's just not worth the anxiety, pain and challenge of getting out.

But we can extrapolate on the theme that the issues that relate to accessibility in general are frequently not well thought out or "accessible" It's a lack of thought to those who are experiencing difficulties. Of course nothing is ever perfect nor can we expect to always accommodate every disability at every time in every place. But you would think that medical office equipment and facilities would at least have options for care in locations that are accessible.

Hey, but even if it was slightly off topic I appreciate the opportunity to bitch out about one of my major peeves.
