Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumElizabeth Warren and the loss of her teaching job.
I think this is a non-story. Her explanation of not wanting to talk about losing a job due to pregnancy is completely reasonable. It is such a personal issue and our culture has always had this weirdness about pregnant women. She was doing fine with her career as a lawyer so it made sense to just let it be.
Times have changed and we see things differently now.
Republicans arguing that this is somehow "a lie" are off base and will only alienate even more women.
FWIW, my own mother was fired from her job when her pregnancy became visible. She hasn't stopped talking about it since!

(68,696 posts)This is a continuation of the Pocahontas BS...where Warren is portrayed as less than truthful about things in her past...It is not true of course but a foreshadowing of what will come should she be the nominee. Will it work? I hope not. My Mother was fired from her job when she was pregnant so it happened... as soon as anyone found out, it was curtains for them. Has Warren addressed this? She may have to eventually.
Maybe she didn't want to admit she lacked credentials and fell back on pregnancy to justify her leaving her job. Who knows? Making yourself more attractive in the job market is what people do and there is nothing wrong with it. I have used two of my pregnancies to explain leaving a job and a hole in my resume...one of the few advantages women have over men in this area. I can't imagine this would be a deal breaker for Warren anyway.
What I see happening here is a right wing attempt to further the narrative that Warren is not truthful... and what else is she hiding? You can't believe her etc...could it work? Sure. But my gut tells me it won't. When you consider who squats in the oval office such a thing is almost laughable.

(68,696 posts)doubt she told different stories maybe it was both the pregnancy and the credentials. Perhaps, it was something else. A woman of her time had very little to use so...I hold nothing against her at all for whatever she did. But the point of my post was to show what the GOP plans for Warren ...paint her as a liar which she is not. We need to be prepared to refute any of their lies.

These are your own words. Its not an example. Its the promotion of a conspiracy theory. You then build upon it in your follow up post. Literally the promotion of a right wing conspiracy theory.
I would think anyone supporting the great Joe Biden would stay far away from such ratfucking nonsense.

The wording is clear. There were no other meaningful qualifiers.

(68,696 posts)it was about pregnancy...could be both, could be a way to not say she didn't have the credentials (as I said before) or it could be she was talking about a different job any of the above is possible. It is not a conspiracy theory when the words come from the candidate herself...I was let go from a job (didn't get on with my boss)...I found out I was pregnant...thus I used that as my reason...does that make me a liar or a bad person ...of course not and the same is true for Sen. Warren no matter what the situation was.

(58,785 posts)of course Dems is correct that the Repubs are using their standard technique of attacking female candidates' trustworthiness and that they will continue to hit this hard. They're "Hillarying" her.
That's because female candidates are seen as being more trustworthy than males, one of only a couple advantages women have, so they set out to destroy those advantages. By the time the Repub swiftboat machine ran out the clock on Hillary, many people, even too many receptive fools here, wouldn't have trusted her for directions to the restroom. And elected Trump instead.

I fully agree with you that its clearly going to be a rw tactic, and have stated so.
I have not said a word about mad. Their context is clear.

(58,785 posts)Imo you should not be claiming stating simple truth is promoting a conspiracy. It's not just out of line, it's what Trump does. This pregnancy story attack is just the latest hostile shot meant to shred belief in her honesty.

(8,745 posts)Biden has a long record of stretching the truth and the plagiarism scandal is very well-known.
It is ironic that Trump, who made his fame pretending his "Swedish" daddy's money was his own before the birther conspiracies, a man who got out of Vietnam on a lie, a man who can't get through a sentence without at least one lie, is going to give it a go against two of the most reputable Democrats out there - Biden and Warren - on the issue of truth.
They'll try, but both Biden nor Warren can weather the ridiculous storms they're gamely trying to manufacture.

(5,240 posts)A good friend was separated from her husband. He'd left her for a younger model. She gave birth to their 4th child in 1971 and wanted to have her tubes tied. Hospital demanded she track him down to sign off on the procedure! Women had no rights when it came to procreation.

What is striking is how long it took for many injustices to be righted. And, under today's GOP and especially MF45, we are going backwards.

(14,593 posts)ends with U. Seriously. This happened to women all the time back when we boomers were kids. I had a teacher in sixth grade who got pregnant and as soon as it was visible she 'left.' I wasn't privy to what she was told, but we ended up with another teacher.

(15,374 posts)NOT be considered a "scandal" and anyone is WAY off base to consider it so, it is still a BIG deal to those who lived through the era and either knew vicariously about or directly experienced what Elizabeth did. Case in point: your own mom.
But I think you are exactly right about people alienating more women by continuing to trumpet this as a "lie."
As an Elizabeth Warren supporter, I'm happy to consider it a win-win situation.
Thanks for your OP!

(90,837 posts)...but unless she chooses to tell people, no one will know until sometime in the 2nd trimester. Heavy-duty elastic girdles can only hide it for so long. Then she gets fired/laid off/pressured to "voluntarily" resign, whether or not she can afford to lose the paycheck and medical insurance.
Elizabeth Warren is speaking the truth -- women's truth. There's a lot of younger women who don't get it, but in time they will.
