Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumMaher, "We Can't Have A Female President Because They're Impulsive"
I am 100% Sanders, even knowing that his health has declined since 2016. He is MORE than up to the challenge of resuming his vigorous campaign and of running the country. He had a medical check-up 3 weeks before his myocardial infarction but did what he, himself, described as "stupid", ignored the symptoms. I concur that it was a big mistake.
I remain as convinced as ever that he will win the primary, locking it up by April at the latest, and coast to victory in the general. I know that multiple DUers will be unswayed by my conviction. Fortunately, there's an area where we can find common ground.
Should one of the women vying for the nomination emerge victorious from the convention, I would be first in line on Election Day to cast my ballot for her. You can take that to the bank.
I recall as if it were yesterday the shock I felt in 2016 when people in focus groups denied that a sexist or misogynistic bias existed against Hillary. I even heard from women who believed this. Such garbage! OF COURSE Hillary suffered a bias based on gender.
Leave it to Bill Maher to distill this idiocy of electability into a sound byte. If you would like to jump right to be best part, advance to time stamp 3:49:

(6,229 posts)my fear is that if a woman wins the nomination, it will be misogyny all the way. Personally, I'd love to see a Biden/Harris ticket. We have never had a woman VP. She would be in a leadership role. Americans (not all) have been slow to accept women leaders. Things are so bad, that we must not blow this..

(2,550 posts)I heard snark in his 'too emotional' bit.
btw-ALL talking heads, and performers, have narcissistic traits.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissism
Some benign. -->"Narcissism is the pursuit of gratification from vanity or egotistic admiration of one's idealised self image and attributes. This includes self-flattery, perfectionism, and arrogance.[1] The term originated from Greek mythology, where the young Narcissus fell in love with his own image reflected in a pool of water."<--
Some malignant. -->"Narcissism is also considered a social or cultural problem. It is a factor in trait theory used in various self-report inventories of personality such as the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory. It is one of the three dark triadic personality traits (the others being psychopathy and Machiavellianism). Except in the sense of primary narcissism or healthy self-love, narcissism is usually considered a problem in a person's or group's relationships with self and others."
I wouldn't put Bill Maher in the second category.
Here's drumpf:
Seven deadly sins of narcissism
Psychiatrists Hotchkiss and James F. Masterson identified what they called the seven deadly sins of narcissism:[8]
Shamelessness: Narcissists are often proudly and openly shameless; they are not bound emotionally by the needs and wishes of others. Narcissists hate shame[clarification needed], and consider it "toxic"[citation needed], as shame implies they are not perfect and need to change. Narcissists prefer guilt over shame, as guilt allows them to dissociate their actions from themselves - it's only their actions that are wrong, while their intention is good.
Magical thinking: Narcissists see themselves as perfect, using distortion and illusion known as magical thinking. They also use projection to "dump" shame onto others.
Arrogance: A narcissist who is feeling deflated may "reinflate" their sense of self-importance by diminishing, debasing, or degrading somebody else.
Envy: A narcissist may secure a sense of superiority in the face of another person's ability by using contempt to minimize the other person or their achievements.
Entitlement: Narcissists hold unreasonable expectations of particularly favorable treatment and automatic compliance because they consider themselves special. Failure to comply is considered an attack on their superiority, and the perpetrator is considered an "awkward" or "difficult" person. Defiance of their will is a narcissistic injury that can trigger narcissistic rage.
Exploitation: Can take many forms but always involves the exploitation of others without regard for their feelings or interests. Often the other person is in a subservient position where resistance would be difficult or even impossible. Sometimes the subservience is not so much real as assumed. This exploitation may result in many brief, short-lived relationships.
Bad boundaries: Narcissists do not recognize that they have boundaries and that others are separate and are not extensions of themselves. Others either exist to meet their needs or may as well not exist at all. Those who provide narcissistic supply to the narcissist are treated as if they are part of the narcissist and are expected to live up to those expectations. In the mind of a narcissist, there is no boundary between self and other.

(8,745 posts)Clinton lost by less than 80,000 votes, so no woman can ever win.
The tally of Pennsylvanias votes, where Trump won 2,961,875 votes to Clintons 2,915,440, was a difference of 46,435 votes. Add that to the official results out of Wisconsin, where Clinton lost by 22,177 votes, and Michigan, which she lost by 10,704 votes.
So, 0.057 percent of total voters cost Clinton the presidency.
Keep in mind that:
A) In the last 10 weeks of the campaign, Clinton gave one speech in Michigan and zero speeches in Wisconsin. Trump made made 106 campaign stops during that time, Clinton made only 71.
B) James Comey is still a douchebag.
C) No one knew that Trump would govern from the extreme right. People (stupid ones) thought he was an independent swamp-drainer who would bring tons of jobs to the Rust Belt, make brilliant trade deals, and make Mexico pay for a gleaming new wall.
D) Relatedly, many people saw Trump as an outsider and Clinton as an establishment politician at a time when anti-establishment sentiment was especially high. Trump can hardly say the same as he has now made the entire GOP in his image.
E) Lots of people - guided by media reports suggesting as much - thought Clinton was nailed on to win, so didn't bother to turn out or thought they could safely vote for a third party candidate.
F) Trump did not yet have a majority of Americans asking to have him impeached.
----
Clinton and Warren are both women. But the candidates are quite different and circumstances are extremely different.

Further, as I stated in the text surrounding this video, every single one of the women candidates vying for the Democratic nomination would have my vote were she to emerge victorious from the primary (all the men, too).

(6,280 posts)If you want to take a sound bite that can be misconstrued and taken out of context then skip to 3:49. If you really want to understand, then listen to the 10 or 15 seconds before that. It's hard for me to believe that people are so ignorant and naive and hate this guy so much that they would be willing to ignore the fact that the words,
"We Can't Have A Female President Because They're Impulsive" was absolutely not his sentiment, but a play on words about Trump and his minions. It's willfully ignorant shit like this that shakes my faith in some members of Democratic Underground and their ability two fairly judge people. Time and again I have corrected this type of bullshit concerning DU members about Bill Maher. I call bulshit on the OP, and on every post that lets hate overcome their sense of fair play.

(6,280 posts).... they are being dishonest. The only deterrent to this behavior is not just correcting it, but to make the purveyor of the falsehoods look foolish as well. Correcting such behavior is all well and good, but will not deter people from making further false accusations. On the other hand, looking foolish once is embarrassing, looking foolish more than once may give them pause.
