Amy Klobuchar compares Elizabeth Warren to Trump

The NY Times:

In an interview on Saturday, Ms. Klobuchar drew an even sharper bead on Ms. Warren, comparing her avoidance of how to pay for “Medicare for all” with Mr. Trump’s habitual shirking of the truth.

“You’ve got a president that lies and doesn’t tell the truth, and I think it puts it on us to say, hey, there’s a different kind of president here where we’re going to be honest with you, look you in the eye, tell you the truth,” Ms. Klobuchar said. (Ms. Warren announced on Sunday that she would release a plan to finance her “Medicare for all” plan in the coming weeks.)

Trip Gabriel, the NY Times columnist describes Klobuchar's comment this way:

"In an interview on Saturday, Ms. Klobuchar drew an even sharper bead on Ms. Warren, comparing her avoidance of how to pay for “Medicare for all” with Mr. Trump’s habitual shirking of the truth."

This attribution was attached to this quote from Senator Klobuchar:
“You’ve got a president that lies and doesn’t tell the truth, and I think it puts it on us to say, hey, there’s a different kind of president here where we’re going to be honest with you, look you in the eye, tell you the truth”.

To my ear, on encountering her statement, she (Amy) is saying that the POS POTUS's behavior makes plain speaking an imperative for 'us' (his opponents in the race). And she is asserting that she's stepping up to that task. I actually don't see that as putting Warren on an equal footing with the POS. This seems to me to be journalistic antagonism.

"bothsiderisms" AGAIN, while I take it that she was saying we need to set an example based on the behavior of the republicans.

trump is a liar and a fraud. Kloubacher didn't even IMPLY THAT.

Simple that we need more specifics

I have been disappointed in NY times for some time now.

When they said it was the "hubris" of President Obama and the Democrats that caused the republicans to reject climate change for instance.

When they said the Democrats and the republicans on the FEC refused to compromise, when the fact was it was the republicans on that committee that refused to work together, NOT THE DEMOCRATS.

Of course their LIE that the email investigation had been reopened after Comey released the letter to the republicans in Congress 11 days before for the election. That was a completely untrue statement. The email investigation had NOT been reopened. They weren't the only media outlet on that one.

I could go on, but the one that should haunt them forever is the false Judy Miller reporting of the WMDs which was the catalyst for our invasion of Iraq

Warren took the hits rather than give short shrift to the American people.

And soon she’ll carve out the more opportune place and time to address more Americans and educate them about her intentions for universal health care.

Shame on those choosing to disingenuously attack her integrity this way. They outed their own poor character by trying to attack hers.

I’m not a fan of Warren’s medicare for all but it’s not hard to just say the funding is unclear and is a risky sell to voters in the general.

Or whatever Klobuchar’s reasons are. There’s no need to attack a democratic candidate by calling them dishonest or comparing them to trump.

I don’t think Warren is dishonest. I think she underestimated the difficulty in explaining away losing work insurance and a tax increase even if eventually everyone comes out ahead.

I hope people can see how this is being placed on a tee for Warren. She has the opportunity to do what other single payer candidates running are too squeamish to do... actually put forward a comprehensive single payer plan.

Don’t get worried about the shots Warren is taking. It’s building anticipation and I personally think she is the right leader to move on this.

“You’ve got a president that lies and doesn’t tell the truth, and I think it puts it on us to say, hey, there’s a different kind of president here where we’re going to be honest with you, look you in the eye, tell you the truth,” Ms. Klobuchar said.

Not reading the "behind the paywall" article, is this the accurate quote?

If so, why would anyone here ASSUME (like the article by an opinion writer does) that this is aimed at EW? Is EW being dishonest about how she is going to pay for M4A? Has she ever even committed to how she is going to pay for it? Why doesn't everyone wait for her to release her plan on this?

And why wouldn't we want to contrast our nominee (whoever it is) with Trump about honesty?

I guess the reporter had mentioned Elizabeth Warren before Amy Klobuchar said that.

Amy Klobuchar, to Donald Trump... that statement had nothing to do with Warren. I listened to the interview she had with Rachel Maddow last night *just now on Rachel's podcast* and she acknowledged that Warren said she would be coming out with her plan soon and that she thinks that is good and then talked about how important it was to show how you will pay for things and that Trump passing a tax cut for wealthy that "added trillions of dollars to the debt" and then crowed about it to his rich friends "I just made you a lot richer"-- that will be a valuable contrast in the campaign.

Her choice is the public option that was originally billed as being part of the ACA and building on that legislation rather than MFA. She said there is no monopoly on good ideas and that she has worked with progressive politicians like Bernie. And she said "I certainly respect my colleagues." These are all actual words she said and not a summary.

Personally, I don't believe that they have the same voters. Today's Progressives will find Amy as being not bold enough for structural change and may even accuse her of being "neoliberal." Today's Moderates will find her message compelling and her stability reassuring.
