(3,733 posts)A third party run at this point probably damages trump
more than our eventual nominee.

(6,229 posts)She will hurt the Dems. I'm a long member of the Democratic Party, but many folks have no party loyality.

(43,415 posts)see my analysis here (on a possible 3rd party run)
Some of it is based off a possible Warren nomination for us, but you can pull out the Warren winning the nomination part and still see where I was going in terms of a Gabbard 3rd party run. In fact, a Biden win will more than like increase Gabbard's pull from us, versus a Warren win, BUT, as you will see at that link, a Biden win more than offsets that by taking Schultz (probably) and Bloomberg (absolutely) off the table as possible indie runs.

(58,785 posts)By definition they have no party loyalty to lack. Gabbard's behaviors and ethics should be just fine with most. Alternative to the Democratic Party is the key criterion of anyone who would throw their vote away as a gesture of rejection, instead of voting for their principles and goals, and she has it.
They include the ones who insist they believe in our ideals far more than we do but who refused to vote Democrat in 2016 and are promising to do it again. Same as those who refused to vote for Obama in 2008 and Al Gore in 2000. And no doubt the same thing in the other national elections if we looked. Literally no doubt. They're always with us.
They love to claim that Democrats lost them because we don't represent "the people," a theme they're encouraged in by hostile power blocs who amplify it to the nation. But they aren't ours to lose.
Otoh, this is bad news for all those Green and Libertarian candidates no one ever heard of.

(43,415 posts)campaigns, plus hopefully the Libertarians can talk Johnson into running again, as he was by FAR their best candidate in terms of drawing votes (mainly from the RW). Add the 5.2 MILLION votes Johnson and McMullin (a few states indy run) got, to Trump and he beats Clinton in the EC and in the POPULAR vote as well, even if you add in ALL of the Stein Green Party voters, who totalled only 1.46 million to Clinton, and many of whom never vote Democratic party anyway.
see here (For that example I posit a Warren win in the nom, but put in the more likely case of a Biden win, and it still applies, except for the Schultz/Bloomberg indie run possibilities go away if Biden wins (which is a great thing for us if neither run, and more than offsets the potential gain that Gabbard as a a Green would draw against Biden versus the fewer she would draw from us versus Warren):
