Joe Biden is proposing a wide array of ideas aimed at helping workers unionize and protecting their rights as he seeks to show voters that he will fight for them in ways that he says President Donald Trump has not.
The Democratic presidential candidate on Friday released a series of pledges aimed at countering what his campaign calls the abuse of corporate power over labor, while also encouraging workers to organize. Some of the measures build on existing legislation or efforts by the Obama administration.
Biden is presenting his labor plan days after he returned to his hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania, for a speech touting his middle-class roots and values, and assailing all the ways he sees Trump failing to deliver for working Americans.

Rivals to his left, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, have presented themselves as champions of the working class, and Warren has moved ahead of Biden in some polls.

(12,712 posts)I have not heard anything about our coming ride on the sweeping wave of automation that will be impacting jobs across all sectors.
Right now, what is being proposed is useful and traditional when it comes to labor and unions vs. corporate power, but it is glaring obvious that automation is not just about efficiency and speed, etc., it is going to be a powerful corporate tool that will swing the advantage to their side when it comes to labor in general. When replacing workers with automation is more profitable than employing people, who can bargain or negotiate with that?
Since we are just getting started, this is the time to start addressing this seriously before it becomes devastating and has to be dealt with using extreme measures, many of which may be draconian. At least Yang has brought the discussion to the table and recognizes this, though I am not advocating for him here.
I would say that this is an important and crucial problem and each candidate should address it and bring it into the limelight along with their ideas about how to stem the crimson tide that will antiquate conventional corporate/labor relationships for decades to come.
Yes, it is that critical and it will accelerate as it rolls out.
