Beto O'Rourke 'open to the idea' of letting people use AR-15s, AK-47s at hunting clubs, gun ranges

Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke said Friday he was open to allowing people to use assault-style weapons like AR-15s and AK-47s at gun ranges and hunting clubs, despite his plan to ban the weapons' purchase and to require owners of existing weapons to sell them to the government.

During a visit to North High School in Des Moines that included a tour and town hall-style school assembly, a student told O'Rourke he has used an AR-15 for hunting deer and asked about how O'Rourke's gun policy would affect people who do.

O'Rourke responded that it was the first time he had heard the case for using an AR-15 to hunt deer, but he said he has heard from Texas ranchers and farmers who use them to fend off feral hogs.

"Perhaps a way to address a legitimate concern or need is to ensure that those who have or want to use an AR-15 are able to keep it at a hunting club or at a gun range so that there is some control and safeguard still placed on that firearm," he said.

One day it's
"Hell yeah, we're comin' for your guns!"
and now it's
you can keep them if you promise you'll only use them at gun ranges and hunting clubs.

"a student told O'Rourke he has used an AR-15 for hunting deer"

I hunted deer in PA 'back in the day'.
An AR-15 would chew that carcass up to being useless.

We have smaller deer in GA than in PA and entry and exit wounds are small.

Certainly no bigger than 30-30 and definitely smaller than the venerable 30-06.

3. Ha Ha. Beto presents a bad idea and y'all are eatin' it up. Assault weapons were/are designed

and manufactured for only one reason and that's to kill human beings. They have no other use, no matter how "good" an idea anyone comes up with. Assault weapons belong with the military. Period.
Get over it 'k?

7. In our mixed up world, some people actually use them for sport.

There are target shooting competitions. I am ok about them being in gun clubs for sport shooting, though that does make me a bit uneasy, because a killer can really learn how to handle one at such places.

But the rational me sees that they are in our civilian society and if we try to get them out 100%, there is likely going to be a lot of bloodshed.

You might find the results informative.

In passing I do not own any semi-automatic rifles and since I am not a hunter I have no interest in acquiring one. If I did ever decide to hunt deer I will likely use a lever action 30-30.

But I tend to be a dinosaur when it comes to firearms.

I still prefer a revolver over a semi-auto pistol.

that publicly and proudly announcing that he's going to take folks guns has the real potential to cost him beaucoup votes nationally and effectively rules out any chance of his winning any statewide election in Texas for the foreseeable future.

I don't know what demographic he's trying to appeal to here. The philosophy of assault rifle nerds is they need these things for self-defense. They aren't going to be satisfied with anything but a completely unregulated firearms market. Guys like me, who own firearms for hunting or sporting purposes, aren't really that interested in assault rifles. An outright ban wouldn't affect us in the slightest.
