Celerity
(43,434 posts)He had a poor debate 2 weeks ago. This was especially borne out in an Iowa poll (B+ Rated Suffolk, which is a DNC qualifier)
Warren has stalled out, I think somewhat due to her debate performance. Biden is the one candidate who is not very much affected by fair to middling debates so far.
Pete was the clear winner of the last debate in this poll (Klobuchar 2nd, Biden the major loser) and this has been reflected in multiple polls lately. Biden has not been harmed much. Castro was harmed when he attacked Biden in the Septemeber debate, and Harris was wounded by Gabbard. Biden recovered nicely from Harris's early debate attack, and she has stalled out mostly since then. Beto was also wounded in a debates, but still may eek out qualifying for the November debate, as might Gabbard (unfortunately.)

Democratic debate: The winners and losers
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50061719
Loser: Joe Biden
At this point, it's clear. Joe Biden's unsteady debate performances aren't a result of his being rusty from a few years out of politics. The Biden that dissected Paul Ryan in the 2012 vice-presidential debate isn't coming back.
His response to the predictable question about his son Hunter Biden's Ukrainian lobbying work was unemotional, when righteous indignation would have been appropriate. He was largely sidelined during the healthcare fireworks. He finally showed some life talking about foreign policy and Syria, calling Trump's military withdrawal "shameful". And while he mixed it up with Sanders and Warren near the end of the debate, the two-on-one fight wasn't to his advantage.
For long stretches of the debate Biden seemed to disappear into the background. That may not be all that bad, given his current standing in the polls. And even his occasional stumbles in his answers may not cost him much support. But as the field narrows in the months ahead, he will need to gain strength to keep pace with Warren. More debates aren't going to help him do that.
Middle of the pack
Winner: Pete Buttigieg
There are really only two candidates left in the middle of the Democratic pack these days. One was a winner; one was a loser.
Buttigieg put together a solid performance from start to finish. His critique of Warren's healthcare plan as divisive and unrealistic, given that many Americans don't want to give up their private health insurance, was effectively explained. He was the only candidate besides Biden who seemed to speak authoritatively on US foreign policy, describing Trump's Syrian withdrawal as a betrayal of American values. His heated exchange with Beto O'Rourke over gun control, when he blasted the Texan for questioning his "personal or political" courage, was a win. If Democrats are looking for a practical politician who is not named Joe Biden, Buttigieg made a strong case that he's the guy.

Stragglers
Winners: Amy Klobuchar, Cory Booker

Amy Klobuchar, on the other hand, has been a non-factor during many of these debates. This time, she stood out. She sparred with Elizabeth Warren on healthcare in particular, suggesting that her plan was a "pipe dream" and saying she had an obligation to tell the American people where to send the invoice for her plan. The challenge for Klobuchar is her pitch is to moderate Democrats - voters who are sticking with Biden or considering Buttigieg. If the Minnesota senator doesn't make a move, this could be her last debate. If it is, she can comfort herself with the thought that she went out on a high note.

Losers
Biden: Not only does he seem to no longer be the candidate his opponents fear most, but he was again somewhat off his game. He offered some odd figures on the middle-class costs of Medicare-for-all. He said expidentially instead of exponentially. He mixed up Iraq with Afghanistan. He said he never discussed his sons Ukraine dealings with him, even though his son has said differently. And at the end of the debate, Biden said that he didnt mean to disrespect his opponents, but that Im the only one on this stage who has actually gotten anything really big done. His opponents bucked, with Warren pointing to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and then suggesting that perhaps certain members of the Obama administration could have been more supportive. Biden hasnt really dropped in the polls as Warren has risen, but hes not showing the sharper version of himself that he probably needs to. And he seemed to be trying a little too hard at points on Tuesday.

But, as I said, Biden has overall not been very affected, and is still the clear front runner

(864 posts)But the other polls overwhelmingly show Biden's lead. Warren is close elsewhere only in YouGov and even there Biden edges her out.
One has to say, though, that overall there are three candidates in the fast lane. Surge for Buttigieg is not reflected in national polls.
Waiting for good state polls. Too early to get a grip on them now, but we all know Warren is doing well in Iowa and NH. Good for her. Biden remains the overwhelming winner in SC however.

(7,277 posts)Scott Rasmussen is a name synonymous with 'flexible polling honesty'. He reported yesterday that trump has 32% support of AA male voters.
It's not that unreasonable to restrict polls to A & B rated is it?

(42,862 posts)I'm guessing that voters are taking into account his heart attack and the stents that were put into his clogged arteries, and they're wondering if anyone with those types of health issues is actually up to the demands of such a stressful job.
All I'm trying to say is I think everyone knows that actually being POTUS is ten times more stressful and hectic than simply running for the nomination... so when Bernie's doctors tell him that he needs to "cut back" on the campaigning, that's not a good sign for his ability to be the POTUS. You can't just "cut back" on the duties and responsibilities required of the POTUS.
