(6,034 posts)There has never been perfect legislation passed in any country in the world
The 1994 crime bill has some good elements. Protections for abuse victims was great. Crime was higher that needed to be addressed.
However the 1994 crime bill locked a lot of non violent drug offenders up and contributed to the mass incarceration problem.
What Sanders is doing now is trying to rewrite history by showing a speech of him railing against the bill while voting for it anyway. A bit disingenuous if you ask me.

(58,372 posts)but had "some good elements" he wasn't listened to, you also state that there has "never been perfect legislation passed in any country in the world" and you call that "disingenuous?"

Because he attacked Hillary Clinton who was the first lady when she wasn't president for her HUSBANDS actions while voting for the same legislation.

(58,372 posts)that preferred the status quo of being "tough on crime."
The Legacy of Nixon, Reagan, and Horton:
How The Tough On Crime Movement
Enabled A New Regime Of RaceInfluenced Employment Discrimination
In this article, I explore the interaction between an alleged backlash
against the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, the rise of tough on crime
politics, the corresponding explosion in United States incarceration rates, and
employment discrimination against individuals with criminal records. I begin
by acknowledging scholars who charge that the growth of American prisons
has been the direct result of a backlash against the Civil Rights Movement.
After exploring the prevalence of tough on crime politics from roughly 1964-
1986, I suggest that the racially-charged political rhetoric fueling rising
African-American incarceration rates should cause us to question the
desirability of unrestricted discrimination on the basis of criminal records. I
proceed to examine the development of mandatory minimum sentencing laws,
noting the racially disparate outcomes of the determinacy in sentencing
movement and finding further reason to question the legitimacy of allowing
employers to indiscriminately screen candidates on the basis of their criminal
histories. I then demonstrate that, despite this suspect history, the current law
surrounding criminal record-based employment discrimination is largely
unconcerned with the labor market rights of ex-offenders. Finally, I examine
the prospects of various reforms that might improve the situation of ex-offender
job applicants, acknowledging the barriers to comprehensive change and
arguing that any reform movement must find its genesis in the AfricanAmerican community

Sanders has been a consistent critic of mass incarceration for decades
Sanders has long had an independent streak on a whole host of issues, from health care to education. But thats also been true for mass incarceration an area in which Sanders was critical of both Democrats and Republicans even as tough on crime policies that ramped up mass incarceration were broadly popular.
In 1991, Congress was debating a punitive crime bill that would have, among many other steps, widened the use of the death penalty and ramped up prison sentences. The final bill a compromise after Democrats and Republicans went back and forth to see who could look tougher was sponsored by Democrats, actually getting more votes from Democrats than Republicans in the House.
(snip)
Bernie Sanders is unique among Democratic presidential candidates as an early critic of mass incarceration. His criminal justice reform plan, released over the weekend, is his map for how hed do something about it.
The proposal covers a variety of issues, including reeling back long prison sentences, ending cash bail, improving oversight of police, boosting public defenders, legalizing marijuana, and banning private, for-profit prisons.

(83,815 posts)I have asked you a simple question a half dozen times or more and you either do not answer or change the subject. You always demand answers of others and refuse to answer the ones asked of you. This is not the first time you have done this. I see it every time that you post.
Here is my answer even though you ignored mine. 1994 was a far different time and crime was a major concern then. Yes he helped pen, yet BS signed it. I don't give a damn that BS voted for it in those times, yet find the hypocrisy of those that condemn one and not the other ludicrous.
BS is far from off the hook in VT:
snip
When I walk into the Northwest State Correctional Facility and I see the lines of black men lined up waiting to go into the mess hall, I know that something's wrong, Rosie says. And I don't think that the public is aware of it in Vermont.

Why Are There So Many African-Americans Incarcerated In Vermont?
Vermont actually has the highest rate in the country of adult black male incarceration, and it has the third highest rate of incarceration for African-Americans overall, Nellis says.
The third highest rate of incarceration for African-Americans in the country, according to Nellis' report. Vermont was just behind Wisconsin and Oklahoma. Here are some other ways to wrap your head around the numbers. You can compare Vermont to the rest of the country:
Nationally the ratio is about five-to-one black-white incarceration. And in Vermont it's more than 10-to-one, Nellis says.
Or you can think in terms of our states population: Only 1 percent of the population in Vermont is African-American but 11 percent of its prison population is black, Nellis says.
