Last week I put forward my #FirstChance criminal justice plan centered around prevention and rehabilitation—not incarceration and over-policing.
Today I met with inmates at the DC jail to hear about their experiences, barriers the face, and what they need to succeed.

When I asked folks in the DC Jail what they’d like people in power to know, one man said “Mental health is the key thing.”
We can’t continue to depend on the carceral system to provide mental health care, we need coverage for everyone, and community-lead diversion programs.
