Democratic Primaries

CEDAR RAPIDS For some campaigns, the stories that come out of first trips to Iowa are about the exuberance of the candidate at their center.
This past spring, Beto ORourke was pictured leaping on counter tops, apple boxes and actual tree stumps to get his face in front of crowds. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York was so excited to chat with Iowans at Iowa Citys Airliner that she mistook a person just trying to get some ranch for a person with a question. But given both candidates have since dropped from the race, maybe a milder touch has a path forward in Iowa.
I would not do it (run for president) if I didnt think there was still a path," said recent late arrival to the race Deval Patrick, governor of Massachusetts. "I dont think the electorate is decided.
Patrick jumped into the race on Nov. 14 and was in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines four days later, meeting with reporters. He said he had planned to announce earlier, but his wife's cancer diagnosis postponed the decision. After a recent cancer-free diagnosis, Patrick said he was ready to play catch up.

(1,713 posts)It would take a huge personality at this point. Michelle Obama, for instance. Bill Clinton got in after Memorial Day and wasn't given a chance but he was an exception to the rule if politics

(10,885 posts)They really think hes a stalking horse to hurt Warren.
But, as a Warren supporter, it seems like a stretch to me.
I think Patrick and Bloomberg are too late to the party.
IMHO our nominee will be Biden or Warren or Sanders.
Id say right now Biden has a 70% chance and Warren 20%, Bernie 10%.

(92,372 posts)goes away from Biden. Those supporting Warren are not going to go over to Patrick, and the speculation makes no sense IMHO
A number of analysts have been throwing out a lot of mis-directions, much of it I believe to stir things up and get attention

Skya, I am not trying to engage in an argumentative discussion with you, I already said I should have been clearer where my post was coming from.
You want to wordsmith me, that's fine.
I am not sure if you are implying that I have racial issues, but if so, you are very wrong

1. Patrick is not really a threat to Warren.
2. Patrick and Bloomberg are both too late to the party to actually win [However, they could still do some damage to other Democratic Hopefulls by poaching voters from other Candidates]
3. The nominee will most likely be Biden, Warren or Sanders.
I also agree that the most likely to win is Biden, then Warren, and then Sanders. Mayor Pete does not have the A.A. support Biden, Warren, or Sanders has. This means he might do well in the first two contests, but will likely do much more poorly in the next two contests. As far as I know, Mayor Pete has never truly dealt with the situation that was created when he demanded the resignation of the citys first black police chief, Darryl Boykins. When Mayor Pete was asked about it in an earlier debate, he seemed to have no real answer, and he seemed to fly higher in the most recent debate because no one asked him about it or confronted him about it. Here's some information about the situation:
https://theintercept.com/2019/09/20/pete-buttigieg-south-bend-police/
After taking over as mayor of South Bend, Indiana, in 2012, Pete Buttigieg made a decision that has dogged his political career ever since: He demanded the resignation of the citys first black police chief, Darryl Boykins.
Amid outrage from the black community, Boykins quickly rescinded his resignation; Buttigieg instead demoted Boykins to work with the citys young people and later called his handling of the situation his first serious mistake as mayor. At the time, Buttigieg said he fired Boykins for his role in the secret recording of some police phone lines, which federal investigators were looking into. In April, when Buttigieg was asked about the situation, he said at a CNN town hall, The reason I demoted the chief was that I found out that he was the subject of a criminal investigation, not from him but from the FBI, and it made it very hard for me to trust him as one of my own appointees. It was frustrating and painful too.
The recording system had long predated Boykins, who sued the city for racial discrimination, winning a $50,000 settlement. Buttigieg has said he has never been legally able to listen to what is on those secret tape recordings. Karen DePaepe, a city official who listened in on the lines and transferred the conversations to tapes to preserve the ones she thought were most important, said in 2012 that what she overheard suggested seriously unethical behavior by police officers, including the use of racist language in relation to Boykins. DePaepe, the only person known to have listened to significant portions of the controversial recordings, was also fired by Buttigieg for her role in the affair and subsequently sued the city and won a $235,000 settlement; she has not commented on the contents of the tapes since. What was said on them has remained a closely held secret.
If Democrats do not sufficiently point this out in the Primary, I am pretty sure that Trump will use it in the general to destroy Mayor Pete's support from Black voters. The last thing the Democrats need is Black voters not showing up at the polls next November.
In my opinion, Mayor Pete should enjoy his time in the sun in Iowa and New Hampshire. I believe that, just as you said, it will be Biden, Warren, or Sanders crossing the finish line.

(2,657 posts)Deval Patrick is currently so far to the right, with both his working for Bain and defending Private Equity/Leveraged Buyout/Vulture Capital firms, that he would mostly hurt more moderate people like Biden and Amy Klobuchar. The biggest threat to Warren right now seems to be Mayor Pete, who according to a few polls has taken enough votes away from Warren in both Iowa and N.H. that she is no longer flying so high there. However, since Mayor Pete seems to be getting almost no traction with A.A. voters, Warren is still in a much better position than Mayor Pete in the long term. Mayor Pete may end up doing well in both Iowa and N.H., but I expect Warren to do better than Mayor Pete in more diverse states like Nevada and South Carolina since she has been getting a lot more traction with People Of Color than Mayor Pete has.
