Elizabeth Warren honors black women in speech disrupted by pro-charter school protestors

( Handled very well all considered. )

By Jess Bidgood Globe Staff,November 21, 2019, 11:14 p.m.

ATLANTA — Senator Elizabeth Warren took the stage in a gymnasium of a historically black university on Thursday and delivered a sweeping broadside against institutional racism that singled out the experiences of black women, a key constituency as she seeks the Democratic presidential nomination.

“When I am president of the United States, the lessons of black history will not be lost,” Warren said at Clark Atlanta University. “Those lessons will live in every part of my presidency – and I will ask you to hold me accountable for that promise every single day.”

It was a marquee event meant to highlight the racial justice themes woven into Warren’s campaign, delivered on a day that her rivals for the Democratic nomination criss-crossed the city after Wednesday’s debate here in an effort to shore up support from African American voters.

But Warren’s event was thrown temporarily off kilter shortly after it began when a diverse group of adults wearing t-shirts reading “Powerful Parent Network” stood up in the bleachers to chant “Our children, our choice,” in protest of her plan to end federal funding for charter schools.

School’s out Charters were supposed to save public education. Why are Americans turning against them?

Today, however, the grand promises of the charter movement remain unfulfilled, and so the costs of charters are being evaluated in a new light. For the first time in two decades, even as the number of charter-bound children rises (the schools will educate between 20 and 40 percent of American students by 2035, according to one projection), the opposition is gathering momentum.

Plenty of Democrats backed (and still back) the idea of charter schools. Plenty of our guys and gals embraced Democrats for Education Reform, but most of the are keeping quiet about it now that the worm has turned.

but this idea must have come out of the Heritage group. It is right up their alley of stupid ideas. America gained its greatness when we introduced public schools.

schools...now I don't like Charter schools but the ones around here are the only option for poor kids who's parents cant afford private school. So the issue is more complicated. You will not improve public schools sufficiently for today's students in these areas...what are they collateral damage?

And I promise you, if we run on ending Charter Schools, we will lose votes in the mid west. In Detroit, classes can be as many as 60 kids...60! If we could revamp schools quickly, it would be one thing but we can't...many building are substandard with few books and teachers who have given up...also Ohio has starved public schools. We need to regulate charter schools and make them non-profit...but we can't simply shut them down when for many kids, there is no alternative. Education is a mess especially in those states with GOP governors.

Also, can't seem to find a way around the Boston Globe paywall antymore, so they're pretty much useless for citations. ABC has it, albeit with a big autoplay video;

7. Charter schools DON'T WORK
Fri Nov 22, 2019, 10:42 AM
Nov 2019

They don't increase student chances of college acceptance or college graduation. They don't improve test scores. They don't perform better than comparable nearby public schools. They just DON'T WORK, and there's been enough time and research to show that.

9. i'm not against charter schools, just charter school rip-offs.

we do charters mostly right in illinois, and in chicago.
no big chains allowed, no for profits. increasingly union.
many of the charters are held by universities, including u of c, the home of education theory and practice. the teacher's union holds a charter, there is an arts high, there is namaste elementary school. one of gullen's schools is around the corner from me. it is a true shining gem, recently on the u.s. news list.

the school system in chi is a slow moving rube goldberg that has seriously not only failed but damaged children for generations.
i completely support the public schools. they should be first in line for tax dollars, and never need a bake sale.

it is slowly becoming less of a one-size-fits-all system, but it is still short on both money and staff to properly serve kids as individuals.
there are about 5 times as many gifted kids as there are seats for them even after decades of expanding selective enrollment.
creative kids are neglected even more.

charters fill a lot of these niches well.

the system hasnt kept up w population shifts, and when they did the first big alignment in a century, the mayor lost his job.
charters are sort of the difference between buying and renting. they just got burned for sinking assets for too long. charters are more nimble.

it isnt the public schools that have been emptied out by the charters.
it's the catholic schools. for decades the ONLY choice for a kid who doesnt fit into the monopoly schools. for those who could afford it, of course.
and because of that, i am happy for the alternatives.
charters here, for the most part, are either first come/first served or lottery, and some are even neighborhood schools that take all comers. there is little to no cherry picking.
if you want to get into special needs kids, i can go there, too. i raised 5 crazy kids in this town, and i have been in every part of the system.

you can support public schools, and also understand their failings.
i would really like to take a deep dive into the numbers, if i had the knowledge to do so. i suspect that the test score comparisons are missing a lot of things. and aint it funny that teachers who dont want to be judged by their kid's test score want to judge charter performance that way.
testing that is not correlated to curriculum is worthless.

maybe i should toss her a few bucks so she can call me and get some nuance.

14. Until Charter schools take any kid from their service area that shows up at their door,
Fri Nov 22, 2019, 10:34 PM

they can never be compared to public schools. What Charter schools do is take kids that have motivated parents. They do not take the kids whose parent or parents don't properly launder his or her cloths or insure that the kid is groomed each day. They do not take the kid that has behavior problems and struggle to figure those out while trying to teach the kid. They don't take kids that are slow learners for whatever reason the kid is slow and try to catch him or her up to his or her peers.

If you give any competent person select components to work with and adequate funding, I promise you that person will be successful. It is an absolute travesty that you say that some Chicago schools have to hold bake sales to support basic educational functions, people should be rioting in the streets about such a situation and politicians most certainly should be held accountable.
