"You should vote for Trump," Biden repeated as Carlos Rojas, an organizer with Movimiento Cosecha, urged the former Vice President to depart from the destructive record of the Obama White House and support a moratorium on deportations.
(snip)
"Any candidate who claims to be against Trump's raids and family separations needs to commit to a full moratorium on deportations," Rojas added. "We won't accept empty promises of immigration reform, while our families are torn apart. We cannot allow history to repeat itself."
(snip)
"I do not take money from corporations," replied Biden, whose campaign last month greenlighted the creation of a super PAC organized by corporate lobbyists who serve clients in multiple major industries, including fossil fuels.
"You listen to Bernie too much, man, it's not true," added Biden, referring to rival 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

The first protests began gradually, when a woman started telling Biden in Spanish that she fears being deported and wanted him to stop defending President Barack Obamas record on deportations. A man who was translating for her then pressed Biden to say that he would end all deportations.
In 2008, I was a volunteer for Obama because I had hope and I believed in the promises that he made to the immigrant community, the man said. The fact is that over those eight years, over three million people were deported and separated from their families.
(snip)
At that point, about a half-dozen other people stood up in the crowd, started making their way to the stage and chanted, Not one more deportation. Biden allowed the man to come to stage and tried to engage him on whether he thinks someone who commits murder should be deported, but the chants drowned him out.
(snip)
Another pair of protesters, including S.C. progressive activist Elaine Cooper, then began yelling at Biden to reject corporate donations. Biden responded that he already does and told them to stop listening to Bernie, referring to Sanders.

With regard to that 2007 immigration bill, as you may know, LULAC, the major Hispanic organization in his country, also opposed that bill as did many other Latino organizations. No, Mr. Biden responded. I will not stop all deportations. I will prioritize deportations only of people who have committed a felony or a serious crime, number one.

As part of their work, Moviemento Cosecha is asking prospective voters to hold candidates accountable on immigration, specifically on whether they would implement a moratorium on deportation on their first day in office. So far, only Senator Bernie Sanders has said he would; Senator Elizabeth Warren has said she would consider such a measure. And the issue is at an all-time paramount, given that the Supreme Court is currently deliberating whether the Trump administration improperly rescinded Obama-era DACA protections to new recipients.
Very similar to how Obama provided relief from deportation for undocumented youth, any president could use their executive power to provide relief for all undocumented immigrants, Rojas said. I think that once that's in place, we can actually have a real conversation about a permanent solution, which includes Congress voting on a pathway to legalization for undocumented immigrants.
Over the last two years, we have seen people stand up for the immigrant community in levels that we haven't seen before. People are outraged because of the family separation process, because of the deaths at the border. This crisis has reached the American public in a real way, Rojas adds. We have been waiting on Congress to pass a comprehensive immigration bill for nearly two decades. We are waiting on presidents to take bold action on immigration. He believes the country needs courageous leaders who will move on immigration reform immediately, in a way that affirms the lives of the migrants who call the country home.
