Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumHere's why Bloomberg insists he's not crazy
PoliticoNo, these strategists insist, the billionaire media titan and philanthropist is not crazy, and neither are they.
The evidence for the alleged noncraziness is based on polling, an emphatically low regard for the current field of Democratic candidates, and an emphatically high regard for Bloombergs purported assets. These include a compelling life story, a record of accomplishment as mayor, credibility with activists on gun control and climate change, and an ability to nationalize the race this coming winter and early spring with a historic torrent of money and messaging.
What Bloomberg contemplates is not so much an exercise in threading the political needle as pulverizing that needle as it has existed for decades.

(16,616 posts)Whose "low regard"? This is the best lineup of candidates I've ever seen. The hard part isn't picking one. It's trying to narrow it down to just one.

(47,633 posts)The diversity helps to elevate the debate and bring a variety of ideas to the table. I can think of several that I really like, that I can picture them in the Oval Office and giving the State of the Union address. That is one of the mental exercises I do when I'm trying to decide how I feel about a candidate. Another one would be picturing him or her meeting with foreign leaders. Policies of course are very important, but in the end, people will be voting for the person first and foremost.

(47,633 posts)but there usually are. They don't generally get very far, but it is a good way to get national exposure and perhaps a cabinet post or a lecture tour. I'm not sure what Gabbard wants to get out of it though, but I wouldn't be surprised to see her down the road on Fox News.

(24,324 posts)programs/platforms, etc.,, than I am with WHO can get elected...!!
Of course., speaking of DUers, the biden supporters say HE has the best chance because of blah blah, the Warren supporters say SHE has the best chance because of blah blah. the Bernie supporters say he has the best chance because of blah blah. and down on the line.
And they all say the other guy or gal could never win because of bloop bloop bloop....
So this IS an open and very big issue... I really do NOT know who would be the best at beating trump..

In the end, we each have to make our own choice and electability certainly should be given a high priority. The primaries often turn out far different than most people expect.

(16,616 posts)Those are great tips. I remember after the first debates, my mother and I were simply basking in the appreciation that these amazing people were willing to run, because running for president has to be one of the more difficult things a person can do in this country. It's a tremendous group of people. Not all of my favorites made it to this point or are polling well, but that's life. Many great ones are still here.
I'm not even anti-Bloomberg, but he's not putting his best foot forward if he's going to broadly disrespect these candidates. I don't think he'll get far with that attitude.

(47,633 posts)as a Democrat. We'll see what he does when someone else gets the nomination. Will he continue to use his vast wealth to get a Democrat in the White House? I'm not holding my breath!
Even the candidates who haven't done well, have at least contributed to the dialogue. It keeps everyone on their toes.

(47,633 posts)I do see that happening. Wrong person for this particular time in history and certainly the wrong party. At another time, I'm quite sure he would have run as a republican.

(10,130 posts)As celebrities in New York, that would certainly explain a bunch.
After what they GOP tried to do to Biden with Ukraine, I am suspicious Bloomberg could be a Trojan Horse candidate to siphon votes away from Biden in the primary. As much as I like Pete, if Joe is the preference of the party, I don't care for the GOP having their thumb on the scale. I do not trust this candidacy. Then again, what can be done about it?
